This activity is designed to provide practice in the application of Lesson 1, measuring azimuths using a lensatic compass.

Determine the azimuth (direction in degrees) to numerous distant known locations.

In an outdoor environment, utilizing the skills developed, students use the center hold technique. The students work in pairs and determine the azimuths to at least five distant known locations. Students must be able to identify the distant known points on the topographical map.

Students will determine the azimuths in degrees. The student pairs will record their results and turn them in to the assistant instructor, or the instructor for evaluation.

Both students must be prepared to brief instructor on the technique used to determine the azimuths.

3. Description of 10 identifiable distant known points

4. Writing paper

5. Pencil

Instructor Resource:

Known direction to the 10 known points

This exercise will be a 'go' or 'no-go' endevor for this drill

To receive a 'go' the student must:

• determine the azimuths to 4 of the 5 identifiablle known points within a plus or minus of three degrees
• record four azimuths and turn them into the instructor or assistant instructor
• Time constraints will be announced and followed prior to the beginning of the drill

Students not receiving a 'go' will seek the asistance of the instructor or assitant instuctor.

Assistant instructors will be students who have received a 'go' and have been instructed on the required teaching techniques.
