A Modern Day Sailor

I am the modern day sailor
My young eyes have seen the sights of old.
My ears have heard the sounds of the past.
My ship is of today, But my spirit is of the past.
I am the modern day warrior.
The haze grey fog of a still ocean morning will not hide me.
The thick overcast of the night will not shield me.
From the heavens, land, and sea...
My enemy watches.
Unseen, but forever vigilant.

I pass no judgment.
My actions and decisions are
not political.
I fight for the beliefs of others.
Without conviction, I will kill my fellow man, thoughtlessly.
The shots I've fired in anger will resound in my memory forever.
The dead and wounded are forever with me. I am them.
They are me.
The sea is my friend, and my enemy.
It can provide the serenity of the gods,
The gentle sound of water parting before the bow.
It can produce your worst nightmare,
In the form of enough power to crush you into oblivion.
In all its majesty, the sea is life,
And it is death. |

I am the sailor of today,
For me, destiny lies just beyond the horizon.
My future, always linked to my past.
Love and hate are burdens to be accepted,
but seldom dealt with.
I am perpetual motion.
I am either coming, or I am going.
Few ties bind me.
The land frees my body.
The sea frees my mind. |
 |
The sea is my life.
Someday, it will be my death.
From it's depths comes my strength.
Those who have fallen before me,
stand watch over me. Silently,
bidding me on.
Though the tides of change move on,
I remain.
Ever constant.
Ever present.
