A Letter from Columbus P. Brent, Surgeon, to Col. Thomas Kilby Smith

Headquarters, 54th Regiment O.V. August 8th, 1862

Thos. K. Smith Col. Commanding

Sir, Owing to an intimation that new clothing will be issued to this command this day, I beg leave to suggest the necessity of an order requiring all to perform a thorough ablution (sic?) of his body previous to receiving clean garments for sanitary reasons. Also that all be compelled of legal (?) to make a change of clothing.

Very Respectfully,

C.P. Brent
Surgeon
