Work at Buffington Has Begun

Worksite at Buffington Island Battlefield; February 2000

Despite our efforts and urgent request to the State of Ohio, namely Governor Taft, as well as other state representatives and agencies, to protect Ohio's only Civil War battlefield from destruction, work at Buffington Island Battlefield has begun.

The picture above was taken on February 25, 2000 and shows the gravel company's worksite along the Ohio River. It is located on the southern edge of what has been termed "The Bloody Ground". Despite a pending appeal with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the company has begun construction of the loading dock facility.

Again,we request that work will be HALTED IMMEDIATELY and that an in-depth study of the site will be conducted, utilizing more advanced technologies than the suggested metal detector surveys, such as ground penetrating radar and thermal imaging, to positively exclude the possibility that any human remains will be mined along with the gravel.

We can stand and argue about the validity of preserving battlefields...but has it come to the point that pleas have to be made to preserve cemeteries and burial sites as well? Have we lost so much of our dignity, have our morals, values and our sense of right and wrong become so corrupted, that we will go so far as to allow the desecration of graves for the sake of mere dollars? We have a moral obligation to prevent the bones of America's dead and the sacred ground in which they are buried from being mined and shipped down the Ohio River to become yet another parking lot or part of a highway. These are principles that govern a civilized nation!
Show the same respect to the brave soldiers who rest in the hallowed ground at Buffington Island that we accord to all Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice and fell in battle. It can not be any other way - we will not accept any less!

We further request that the State of Ohio to preserve OUR History and OUR Heritage for future generations and take active steps to support our efforts in this respect and preserve Buffington Island Battlefield. Many voices, Ohio citizens and people from all around the United States, repeatedly have made their wishes known to officials in Ohio. "Please PRESERVE Buffington Island Battlefield - do NOT destroy it. Do not sell out our nation's heritage!
