November 2000
Word has been received [11/5/2000] that the mining at Buffington Island Battlefield has finally
begun - dump trucks and bulldozers are actively engaged in destroying Ohio's only Civil War battlefield. At this point, should any of the Morgan's Raiders' grave-sites be discovered, that may be located in the area, it will be by bulldozers!!
The area in question is Northwest
of the intersection of St. Rt. 124 and Bald Knob-Stiversville Road. It is
presumed that the company will first bury the "Bloody Ground" as stipulated
in the MOA. At this time, materials are being hauled across the road to the
crest of the hill (near the Middleswart house site) and dumped. [see picture above and below]

The Buffington Island Battlefield Group [BIBG, Inc.] and the Ohio Civil War
Trail Commission, with the help of the Civil War Trust applied for monies
from the Ohio Dept. of Transportation. The money will buy easements for
marking the Morgan Trail across Ohio [including the signs for marking the
trail and battle areas) as well as easements at Buffington.
The only option left now is containment. The applicant parties will have to
raise $19,000 in matching funds, if the application is successful.
If you know of any groups, organizations or businesses that would like
to sponsor this effort, please put them in contact with Edd Sharp, President
of the Ohio Civil War Trail Commission at eddsharp@aol.com
If anyone has any ideas to help the Battlefield at this point please
share them now. BIBG, Inc. will hold a meeting soon to discuss the matter.
If you are interested in what we are doing and would like to have the
meeting minutes forwarded to you, please contact Carrie LuPardus, President
of the BIBG, Inc. at CarrieLuP@aol.com or Marlitta H. Perkins, Spokesperson, SCV - Eastern KY Brigade and Trustee of the BIBG, Inc. at morgansmen@usa.net
