Jose Luis Davila

I was born and raised in a small town in México called "General Terán." It's Located about an hour southeast from Monterrey. A town with its own way of living, a great place to do a study in human behavoir (anybody interested?). When I turned 16 years old I went to Monterrey to pursue my career in Civil Engineering at the State University "Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, School of Civil Engineering." Graduated in Fall of 1990. In September 1992, I relocated to San Fernando Valley in California looking for new adventures. I was so lucky to meet some many grat people that now are my friends. I pursued a M.S. degree in Environmental Engineering at Calilfornia State University, Northridge graduating in summer of 1997.

Engineers have to balance their calculating life somehow. The way I do it is by using my free time for the Arts. I love Music,Black & White Photography, and Travel.

Music:

I have a CD collection of about 80 CD's which compiles classical music, Opera, lots of Spanish Rock (Presuntos Implicados, Caifanes, Soda Stereo, Luis Miguel, etc.), Soft Rock (Sting, U2, REM, etc.), Several Soundtracks from my favorites movies (Big Blue, The Crow, Philadelphia, etc.) and International music (brazilian and african).

Photography:

Came to my life not too long ago, but has taken a big piece of my heart. I do not have a particular interest in photography, but I really like door and window pictures. My greatest achivement in Photography is becoming one of the finalist in the 1996 Photographer Fourum College Students Contest with a picture that I shoot in a small town call "Villa de Santiago" (Santiago's Village) located about 30 min southeast of Monterrey. .

Travel:

I have not travel a lot, but try to have vacation at least ones a year.

My first trip was Guanajuato, Mex. One of the most beautiful towns in Mexico is located in the central part of the country. I known for its architecture and art. Peolpe say that there is one church for every cantina in town. It is also known for the art festival "Cervantino" that happens every year in August.

I was in Mazatlan one of the beaches on the pacific coast. Great place to have fun.

I spent a weekend in Mexico City, too big for me. There are tons of things to do. I had a good time, though. I visit the great pyramids "Teotiuacan" is mayestic, you can even feel the energy in that place. I also visited Garibaldi, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Zocalo, y el Templo mayor, great experience.

When I lived in California I visited the main national parks "Sequoia" and "Yosemite" beautiful places to camp and hike. Santa Barabara, Solvang San Diego, Monterey, San Francisco, and of course the Border Area Tijuana, Rosarito beach and Enscenada. Great cities each with their own special flavor.

Zacatecas is other of mi favorites cities. It is full of art and history. I been ther twice already and plan to be back soon.

I also had the opportunity to travel to Alburquerque, New Mexico small city with great peolpe. When to Santa Fe for a day, very unique architecture. I liked Alburquerque so much that I have been back three times already.

In summer of 1996 I decided to go to Europe for a month. A trip that I had been planning for more than two years. It was a great expirence. My friend Rosa and I backpaked through Europe by train. Paris, Madrid, Granada, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Vienna, Basel, Bruxelles, Brujes, and London to go back to Paris. A excellent experience that nobody should miss.

I spend a weekend in "San Jose de Los Cabos" one of the most visited beaches in Mexico nowdays. Blue, suny beaches, transparent seawater full of surprises. We hare sailing to see the sunset and I saw a Stingray jumping out of the water, showing its white bottom. It was great. If you want to have fun, this is the place. Lots of Canadians and Europeans.

Since I live here in Austin TX. I have visited San Antonio, beautiful city with lost of thing to see and do, best place in San Antonio the River Walk at night. Houston, big city with impresive downtown skyline, interesting place in Houston the Contemporary Art Museum. Galveston, victorian achquitecture, very unique but bad beaches. A great place in Galveston is "Moody Gardens" A futurist museum with a live rainforest.

On December 26, 1997, I went to Guadalajara. The main purpose was a wedding of a very good friend, but of course I took the opprtunity after the wedding to visit the big city and surroundings. Big city with great places. But the one that really impressed me was the "Hospicio Cabañas" initially built to serve as a hospice. Now is a museum that hold one of the greatest pieces of art. Jose Clement Orozco's master piece. It is a "fresco" painted in the walls and celling of a chapel. Guadalajara it's a place where tousands of artesans lived. I loved it

My last trip was an excellent choice, it took me about three years to finally make the decision to go. South America: Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, three countries with three different economies, but with a lot in common people, landscape and nature. The three countries are located in way that they cover part of the andian, and the amazonian areas.

I started in Bogota, Colombian, visiting very good friends which I have met in California. I spent 2 weeks sightseeing through all the small towns around Bogota: Fusagasuga, San Bernardo, Pandi, Venecia, Guatavita, Raquira, Zipaquira, and the coffee growing zone Armenia. Awesome landscapes and vegetation.

After the two wonderful weeks in Colombia I flew to Quito, Ecuador. The day after I arrived there I took a bus to go to Ipiales a Colombian city located at the border of Colombia and Ecuador. There, there is a cathedral with a wonderful arquitecture, "La catedral de las Lajas." I spent a couple of hours and then went back to Quito.

I spent 5 days in Quito, sightseeing the big capital of Ecuador. Quito is a city with two faces, one is the Old Quito where all the buildings conserve the antique arquetecture, and the New Quito were skycrapers and modern looking buildings emerge from the ground.

I had the oportunity to go to the Galapagos Islands for a weekend. Something that I want it to do very much and even though was the most expensive part of the trip it was worth it. I loved the people and the fauna and vegetegion of that area Ecuador. The sea water was clear and the sky awesome blue.

After a week in Ecuador I flew to Cuzco, Peru, the inca empire...
