Kachina dancers Sonali Perera and Alex Garcia danced in Victoria's Royal Theatre plaza on May 24th 2003.
In ancient times, the Kachinas lived on Earth but sent to live in the bottom of a great desert lake and left their masks behind. (Mask: comes from Latin word "maska"- which means apparition, witch)
Native American legend states, the kachinas themselves returned from time to time to dance for the people, but after the dance a member of the community always died, or "left with the kachina". Finally agreeing to come no more, the kachinas authorized dancers to take over their ritual roles.
