Our goal is to invest 100% of your donation in long term securities (preferably technology stock) and only award some of the interest gained in the JOOP Fund portfolio to Computer Science students. The Johannes "JOOP" Fuchs Memorial ScholarshipThe Johannes "JOOP" Fuchs Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in the spring of 1999 by the friends and family of Johannes Joop Fuchs. Currently accepting donations from local community members and organizations that wish to support senior high school students entering a Computer Science field.
An advisory committee with a vested interest selects all student applicants. Recipients are selected on the basis of character, leadership, and knowledge within the field of Computer Science.
Awards vary from year-to-year depending on the student's academic performance and post-secondary education plans. Although monetary awards are always given, the overall goal of this fund is to support high school Computer Science classrooms via new computer equipment loans. Each loan has a life of three school years, after which time all such equipment will be awarded to outstanding students. This process benefits the students as well as continually updating computer equipment in the classroom.

Tax Credit for Supporting Public Schools
Pennsylvania Legislature Recognizes Your Donation...
Starting July 1, 2001, businesses that contribute money to qualifying scholarship organizations or organizations devoted to educational improvement can realize state tax credits known as Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC). The available tax credits are substantial, varying from 75% to 90% of the amount contributed by a business, not to exceed an annual total tax credit of $100,000.
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has been directed to develop guidelines to determine the eligibility of qualifying organizations and to post a list of qualified organizations on its website. Because these tax credits were enacted by the Pennsylvania legislature on May of 2001, complete guidelines have not yet been issued. Local Business DonationsIf you own your business or just work 9 to 5, there are many opportunities to give donations. In addition, most corporations will match your monetary donation to a nonprofit organization! Listed below are just a few ideas you can place in the mail today:
- Donate old hardware even if it is not in working order. Many student certifications, including A+, require hands-on activities for an effective lesson. Eventually students may strip valuable parts from your hardware donation for their own personal use. All environmentally safe hardware is welcome.
- Giving various software applications, such as programming languages and operating systems, improves the student's learning environment. By upgrading a software package you create an opportunity to donate the software that was in use prior to the upgrade. Considering the shear number of public schools involved, almost all software can be used in the classroom as long as the software is accompanied by the proper license agreement(s). (In addition, each student can reuse some storage media used for transporting the software.)
- Your unwanted office supplies can be a donation. A business with a new name has much to offer. Consider donating paper with outdated letterhead, pens with old logos, or even unwanted mouse pads. Donating common items found around the office can offset student demands placed upon the school. (If I had a penny for every pencil and pen I loaned to my students, well you get the picture...)
- Technical articles and PC magazines keep Computer Science curriculums updated. Providing public schools with current technical articles validates fundamental lessons in Computer Science. A student's reading and technical writing skills will be enhanced via PC magazine donations.
- Spearhead a collection effort today. An easy way to be recognized within your community is to create a fundraiser. Surprisingly little effort is required to create a fundraiser. Just visit a local wholesale store in your area and buy small items in bulk. Candy, chocolate, and snacks usually work best in this area. For example, I purchased a box of 100 large lollipops for only $6.29 and quickly sold them for $0.25 each. That's an $18.71 profit. The key is to sell items such that a payment can be simply dropped in a sealed coffee can without giving change. (A poor example is to sell lollipops for $0.15 each, which requires change for most transactions.)

Hardware and Software DonationsEvery school environment places a heavy demand upon computer hardware, which in-turn drastically shortens its useful life span. Therefore, many school districts are realizing the importance of creating an organized inventory of computer parts. Students who become directly involved with this process gain valuable knowledge within the Computer Science field. Excess computer parts can be awarded directly to the students or to other school districts. Several of my students, who could not afford to purchase a new computer, have built complete functional computer systems from your hardware and software donations. Please consider giving a tax-deductible donation today...
