Andreas Findig
He's writing theater plays and science fiction stories, serious poetry and radio scripts, journalistic essays and children's books.
The well versed author Andreas Finding lives in Vienna, Austria. He wrote for Perry Rhodan and also wrote “Lausbiber-Alarm” (Lousebeaver Alert), the first German language science fiction children's book of its kind.
Lousebeaver Alert had been written from an ironic point of view. The rest of this article is therefore more or less a self portrait by the author:
Findig talks about himself:
I was born in 1961, exactly 35 days before the launch of the largest science fiction series on Earth, at Linz at the Danube River. (The same city where Jonhannes Keppler used to live most of his life, a city also known for the "Prix Ars Electronica", the worldwide most regarded award for Computer Art.) Raised in the close by - and rightfully, and absolutely unknown - Neuhofen at the Krems.
Dropped out of the Traun Highschool, two month before my finals, to venture out into French, Swiss and Austrian agricultural communes to learn how to till the land, cut trees, mow meadows, milk sheep (which is damn difficult), make cheese, churn butter, bake bread … and still find the time to write “experimental” poetry.
After one or two years, (I can't remember exactly, it's a long time ago) I had enough of this life and got conscripted as one of the first one-hundred civil service people in lieu of military service in the Bundesheer. I served at a youth center in the castle region (Burgenland) where I was mostly occupied with serving wine and organizing Punk concerts, leaving ample time to play with the light organ. After that time, I moved to the big city: Vienna! Tried out several jobs, among them a boat rental outfit at the Danube River, allowing me to read and write amidst a beautiful landscape. Finally, I become a book seller and cut my long hair.
Ever since I was fifteen, I had released anthologies as part of the "Manuskripten" and "Protokollen" publications and similar flagships of the “super-intelligent” experimental belletristic scene. Then I thought to have experimented enough and wanted to write for real readers. I was writing all kinds of stuff and garbage and established the "Gesellschaft für poetische Umtriebe", (Society of subversive Poetry) and the "Studiengruppe angewandte Poesie" (Study group of applied Poetry, short "STAPO" – which is also the name for State Police in Austria), advance from simple book seller to a very busy book buyer of a larger franchise and then slowly changed to become a journalist and author.
In 1985 I published, in association with Dr. Dr. Günther Nenning, one of the leaders of the Austrian Green Party, the booklet "Die Schlacht der Bäume" (Battle of the Trees) as part of the occupation of the Hainburger Au, (Heinburg Meadows), wrote children's books and audio plays and sank my teeth, much to my own surprise, into the binary mysteries of computing. Worked on some columns for the "Neuen Zürcher Zeitung" and the "Wiener Zeitung" (the oldest daily news paper in the world), wrote "Das Fest des Voyeurs - Ein Spiel für Stimmen und Spiegel", (A Voyeur's Fest – A Play for Voices and Mirrors) which debuted in Steyr in 1988, then ventured into the genre of non-journalistic Prose where I drift off more and more into the realms of Fantasy. (Every form of literature can be considered controlled fantasy.)
My first fantastic stories appeared as part of the "Phantastischen Bibliothek" (Fantastic Bibliography) by Dr. Franz Rottensteiner at Suhrkamp Publishing and at "Ariadne Press" at Riverside , USA. I received the "Science Fiction Club Deutschland" Literacy award for the story"Gödel geht" (Goedel is leaving) in1991. Among other prices and awards I also place fourth at the William Voltz Short story Contest in 1998.
Besides magazine, news paper and radio projects, the first Children's books were published. Books such as: "Das einsame Zweihorn Tama-La", (Tama-La, the lonely dual-horn (a unicorn with two horns, kind of, MK)) at Jungbrunnen Publishing, Vienna, 1991; "Die Inseln aus dem Hut", (Island out of the hat) Sankt Gabriel Publishing, Mödling, 1995) and the first audio plays: "Tramperbus", RIAS Berlin, 1991 und "Der Stern mit Schluckauf", (The Star with a hick-up) WDR 1997. More of them are still hibernating on my hard drive and wait for their releases.
In 1996 my poetry book "Der Himmel von hinten" (Heaven from the back) was released by "Resistenz" Publishing, Linz , and in 1998 my narration "Gagarins Galaxis - Phantastische Bagatellen", (Gagarin's Galaxy – fantastic bagatelles) with very pointy, short an scurrile stories. Then in the summer 1999, a book with long narrations, titled: "Gödel geht" (Goedel is leaving) as part of the "Edition Pangloss" was released.
My original motto as author: "Power To The Poets!" changed to a lesser elite style conviction and for many years I was able to live by the motto: "Schriftsteller sein, wie Thomas Muster Tennis spielt!" (Write like Thomas Muster plays tennis!). However, I became skeptical, considering the ATP-Rankings and changed my motto to: "Schriftsteller sein, wie Monkey Probleme löst!" (Be a writer, the same way, Monkey solves his problems!) Everyone can see now that I'm really serious …
Perry Rhodan issue 2101 was the last contribution to the Perry Rhodan series by Andreas Findig.
