Win the TRI Mystery Price

Everybody knows comic strips. You can see them on the funny pages or buy them as books. Some are serious others are so funny, they can make your day.

Reinhard Habeck, an Austrian comic artist, has invented the Rüsselmops comic strips. Rüsselmops is a little space dog equipped with a trunk and simply a funny character. TRI has acquired the rights to translate the stories of Rüsselmops into English. There is just a little problem: We need to find a catchy name for this critter, a name that would reflect his looks and character.

We thought about: Trunky, Trunkster, Zooks, Trunkypud ... Hmm ... really, this could only be substitutes for possible names the Galactic News readers could find. What does Rüsselmops mean in a literal translation? Well, a dog with a trunk, a Rüssel = trunk combined with a Mops = pud. You see it yourself, this is not satisfying at all. We therefore invite you to participate in a little name finding game, where at the end, we'll find the most suitable name for this little character. The winner will receive a mystery price only known to Reinhard and yours truly.

Please, submit your name choice until 20 November 2005 by simply clicking on: Rüsselmops in English

Make sure you include your e-mail address and postal address. And as always: the more participants, the better the selection from which we can chose the right name.

Here is a sample of Rüsselmops in action: In this case with a substitute name: Trunky.

Thanks
Mic

Norman Riger
(The Poem Lizard)

Poetry in Motion

We encourage all readers to submit their
Perry Rhodan or Atlan poetry.

Again this month's poem was written by TRI member Norman Riger.

Collecting Perry Rhodan novels many science fiction fans already know.
Perry Rhodan novels form the longest row.
And the total of 2303 will continue to grow.
I read them in German but am very slow.
I don't really care which edition I'm acquiring.
The words contained are very inspiring.
Many collectors have a complete set.
Others try but don't have them all yet.
Which books are the hardest to get?
People who have them, I've never met.
A complete collection is really a sight to see,
If you are serious in your library it will be.
In South America there is a race of sentient moles,
quietly living at the bottom of very deep holes.
They have no electricity or source of light.
Many of them like to read during the night.
They've learned how to produce luminous ink,
and produce large quantities in the kitchen sink.
Spanish is the language they most often use.
They're not concerned with copyright abuse.
Fifty lines per inch is the format they choose.
Their books are very tiny and easy to lose.
A copy you will probably never ever see,
and in your collection it will never ever be.
In South Asia there are many swamps and bogs,
with a society of intelligent sentient frogs.
They stay underwater and surface to get air.
Every month most attend the local book fair.
Some read German and others know English,
only a few read Chinese, Czech or Finnish.
As underwater electronics is hard to get,
they have no connection to the internet.
Paper is a poor choice for their book's pages,
but the right plastic endures underwater for ages.
A copy you will probably never ever see,
and in your collection it will never ever be.
In outer space there are numerous alien races.
They visit us often and stay at secret bases.
Their spies are busy on the planet of my birth.
They have copies of every book on the earth.
One race has a Perry Rhodan monument twenty miles long,
another has converted each of the novels to a song.
Predicting the future is something I can't do,
but I have some important questions for you.
Uncountable aliens can read any Perry Rhodan book,
but to get a copy in English, where do you look?
New English translations will we ever see?
A legal copy in your library will there ever be?

Norman Riger, Minnesota, USA, July 2005.

William Voltz

1164 Vishna Fever
1165 Einstein's Tears

Perry Rhodan Author's Profile

William Voltz

William Voltz, »Willi«, was born 1938 in Offenbach, Germany. Like many of his SF Colleagues, he became interested in Science Fiction already in his childhood. His first SF-Novel: »Sternenkämpfer« (Star Fighter / Warrior) was released in Autumn 1958 as part of the Utopia pocket book series. Numerous Fandom activities and short stories preceded this release. In 1961, he received the "Best Fan-Author" reward. Because of his engagement and membership of the Science Fiction Club Deutschland (SFCD), he had the opportunity to meet K. H. Scheer, who in 1962, offered him to work for the PERRY RHODAN-Team. His first Perry Rhodan novel was issue # 74 »Das Grauen« (The Horror) and it didn't take long and Willi Voltz established his seat at the table of Perry Rhodan "Core Authors". Then as of 1969, when the ATLAN series was started, Willi Voltz, joined the author team of the Perry Rhodan sister series. At first, he simply contributed novels to the Atlan series, but later took over as ATLAN-Exposé writer, parallel to contributions to the Perry Rhodan main series. In 1973, the Fantasy-Series »Dragon« was launched and Willi Volts also contributed to this series.
As of 1974, Willi Voltz became the Exposé-Author of the PERRY RHODAN-Series and slowly changed the story lines to reflect more philosophical aspects. Despite his foresight and planning of the story lines into the middle of the 1200 cycle, his death in 1984 left a great gap. His last Perry Rhodan novel was issue # 1165 »Einsteins Tränen« (Einstein's Tears).

Ralph Voltz

1810 The path to Camelot

2247 Assassination on Hayok

Perry Rhodan Graphic Artist Profile

Ralph Voltz

Ralph Voltz was born on 4 June 1969 in Offenbach, Germany. His mother married Perry Rhodan Author Kurt Mahr after the untimely death of his father William Voltz. Kurt Mahr lived at that time in Florida, USA and Ralph had to make the difficult choice of either living in Germany or to move to the USA. He then decided to move to the "New World" together with his brother.
His new home was Melbourne, Florida, where he visited the Melbourne High School. "There, I received my future direction," he said.

Between 1987 and 1993, he visited the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. After receiving his diploma, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he was working as illustrator from 1993 to 1995. Ralph was also working for the Book Review department of the New York Times, as well as the Science Fiction Magazine "Chronicle". During this time, and especially the fall semesters, he taught Art at his old College in Savannah, and coached the college soccer team. (It is not clear here, if he coached soccer or American Football, MK).

In 1995, Ralph, created the cover for the "Discovery" CD by John Tesh. A couple of years earlier, he had created the covers of Perry Rhodan planet novels # 336 "Der Nakk und die Katze (The Nakk and the Cat) and # 340 "Beinahe ein Mensch" (Almost a human). Since 1996, he then advanced to become one of three title picture artists for the Perry Rhodan series. His fist PR series title picture was issue # 1810 "Der Weg nach Camelot" (The path to Camelot). Parallel to his work on the Perry Rhodan series, he also worked for Bernt Publishing on the Perry Rhodan Comic series. In 1996, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Asked about his role models, Ralph mentions his father, William Voltz and his Science Fiction- and Fantasy-Art books collection. The collection is part of Ralph's life in Charlotte, NC, constantly being added on. One of the books of his collection is a book by Michael Whelan "The Art of Michael Whelan". Ralph goes on and mentions other influences such as: John Berkey, Frederic Remington, Richard Estes, John Singer Sargent und Brad Holland.

Ralph's first client was probably his own father Willi Voltz, who had asked the 14 year old son to create a Cartoon for the Perry Rhodan Readers Feedback Pages. Only after the fourth or rather fifth attempt the father was satisfied with Ralph's work. Ralph thinks, in retrospective, that these five trials weren't enough, but it introduced him the tough times in the world of art.
Ralph Volts quit Perry Rhodan art in September 2004 to be able to devote his time for other endeavors. His last Perry Rhodan title picture was issue # 2247 "Attentat auf Hayok" (Assassination on Hayok)

Peter Krassa signing a book

Peter Krassa and Erich von Däniken

Peter Krassa in July of 2005

Peter Krassa died at age 66

The popular writer and author Peter Krassa (66) has died. The author from Vienna fell on his way to the podium during a convention in Fulda, Germany. He sustained injuries that where so severe that even after an operation he wasn't able to recover. The Austrian writer died on 11 October 2005 at the Vienna Hospital Barmherzige Schwestern, shortly before his 67th birthday.

Peter Krassa wrote 19 non-fiction books and was a world renowned expert in the field of fringe science phenomena. His books had been translated into 17 languages. His most famous works were: "Gott kam von den Sternen" (God Came from the stars), "Als die gelben Götter kamen" (When the Yellow Gods Arrived), "Phantome des Schreckens" (Phantoms of Horror), "Feuer fiel vom Himmel" (Fire from the Sky), "Das Licht der Pharaonen" (The Light of the Pharaohs), "Die Palmblattbibliothek und andere geheimnisvolle Schauplätze dieser Welt" (The Palm Leaf Library and other mysterious places of this World), "Satelliten der Götter" (Satellites of the Gods), "Dein Schicksal ist vorherbestimmt" (Your fate is Predetermined) , "Der Wiedergänger" and his last book "Men in Black". Further more, he also released three biographies among them: "Däniken intim" (Däniken up and close) and "Erich von Däniken – Der Besessene" (Erich von Däniken – Possessed).

His books and anthology contributions were published by Langen Müller-Herbig, Weltbild, Hermann Bauer, Bardtenschlager, Omnibus, Caesar, Meyster, Argo and John Fisch Verlag, and recently at Kopp and Tosa. Pocket book versions were published by well known publishers such as Heyne, Goldmann, Ullstein and Moewig. Peter Krassa also worked as editor and reporter for large Austrian daily news papers and magazines such as the "Salzburger Nachrichten", "Tiroler Tageszeitung", "Niederösterreichische Nachrichten", "Samstag", "Neue illustrierte Wochenschau", "Die ganze Woche" and the "Kurier". Peter Krassa also wrote two newspaper novels and a children's book and participated as co-author in several anthologies. In addition, he published uncounted fringe scientific papers with international Magazines such as: "Sagenhafte Zeiten", "Magazin 2000", "UFO-Nachrichten" or "Esotera".

During the 1970's and 1980's, Peter Krassa published well known articles for the "Perry Rhodan Report" and the legendary "Perry Rhodan Magazin". As pioneer in the field of the "Ancient Astronaut Theory", and because of his friendship with Erich von Däniken and Clark Darlton, he became well known to readers inside the "Fantastic" genre. Peter Krassa was also an active member of the Karl-May-Society, the Science-Fiction-Gruppe-Wien (SFGW) and the Archeological Research Society and SETI, also called AAS.

The research for his books led Peter Krassa to Egypt, India, China, Russia and Latin America. The author didn't want a burial and donated his body to science and anatomy. Peter Krassa's fantastic world of thoughts lives on in his books. Anybody who had met Peter Krassa and belonged to his circle of friends knows that he was not only a great author but also a kind gentleman.

Condolence book: http://peterkrassa.alien.de/start.html

Translator's note 1: Some of the works of Peter Krassa may have different titles as suggested in the English translation. I could not find a suitable English translation for the book title "Wiedergänger" and can only suggest: "Returning".

Translator's note 2: The word: phantastisch = fantastic is not to be confused with fantasy. These genres are being treated differently and are separate subjects in Germany and German speaking countries.

Translator's Note 3: Peter Krassa's work could possibly also be found under Esoteric Literature, some bookstores may even list his books under the New Age genre.

Translator's Note 4: Fringe Science is a scientific area not taught in universities and limping at the border lines of accepted scientific research, sometimes interdisciplinary, it even crosses established scientific realms. It is also called: Layman Science. Fringe Science has helped in many cases to change the minds of accredited scientists, making them look for alternative research methods, usually uncommon to their fields.

On a personal note.

Honestly, receiving the e-mail of Peter Krassa's passing from Germany didn't ring a bell with me at first. A quick phone call to Willi, our TRI-Archivist in Germany; however changed all that. The lights went on!

I hadn't recognized his name, because I had never read any of his books! Recalling the conversation with Willi made me aware though, that I surely had read from Peter Krassa, nevertheless.

Peter Krassa was, as I understand, a contributor behind the scenes, to Erich von Däniken's works. Being a long time reader of EvD's books about ancient astronaut theories, in which EvD tries to make his cases with breathtaking pictures and theories, I was certainly influenced not only by EvD but also by Peter Krassa, even though through the "back door" so to speak. Knowing now that Peter Krassa and Erich von Däniken were a team and also very good friends, the pieces of the puzzle come together and form a big picture.

Both authors, Erich von Däniken and Peter Krassa, made me see the world with different eyes and put the match to the kindling, which I would want to call: Don't believe everything they (governments, churches etc ...) want to make you believe - use your own brain!
This led me on a personal journey through our world religions, not to compare them or to seek for salvation of any kind, but to see what can be taken from these "Holy Books" other than purely religious values. I learned to look under the covers.

Boy, was I in for a surprise! I opened a can of worms. The Bible (OT, NT and Apocrypha), the Khuran, The Thora, the Rig Veda and the Popul Vu of the Quiche Maya, have many things in common, many of us are not aware off. There are answers to the questions: Who built the Pyramids or where did our ancient Gods come from? Where did negroid people come from in the times of the Aztecs and how could they've come to Central America before Christopher Columbus? ... The list is long.

The writings of EvD and PK inspired my unfinished book YABORATAM, (Yet Another Book Of Religions And Thoughts About Mankind) which I would have never started, if it weren't for these two authors.

I can really say thanks to Peter Krassa for opening my eyes and also for standing up to his believes against all odds.

Thanks Peter!

I bid you farewell on your last journey.

Mic's TRI-Tech Tips

Have you ever wondered what happened to your MS Word Custom Dictionary when you upgraded to a new Word version or bought a new computer and had to re-enter all these words, English or foreign, to overcome the spell checker demon? Even worse: your operating system crashed on you and you're really, really struggling? Let's try to find some answers ... (this is a great opportunity for participation by the readership)

Everything I'm telling you here worked for me, which doesn't mean that it'll work for you. This is dependent on the operating system, Word version and how much you want to get involved in fiddling around. The nice thing about it is that you don't need to be a rocket scientist to follow or simply check out what I'm trying to get across.

Important as always: BACK UP up your files and documents before you make any changes. This sounds scary but is the naked truth when it comes to our beloved microprocessor friends and the programs which are supposed to run flawlessly. Nobody is perfect and certainly no computer is. (and keep them kittens and lizards away from the keyboard, because they're a special challenge to your machine and later to you)

So far, everyone has worked with a dictionary of some sort when composing a document, writing a book or just squeezing out a nice love letter to la amante. At times it cannot be avoided that the spell checker takes over and tries to tell you that your spelling seems to come from the planet Ertrus. No need to frown! No spell checker is perfect anyway. Grammar checkers are another can of worms ... but who am I telling this ...?

Standalone MS Word versions may only come with the normal English and Custom Dictionaries. (I'm only referring to English and not other languages. However, the schemes are similar) Here it depends in which language region you live, because that determines what kind of Word version you are able to buy in the stores or on-line.

There are versions available for: US, UK, Australia, Belize, Canada, Caribbean, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Ireland ... I give up.

If the spell checker is set to, lets say English UK, then don't expect the right spelling when you want to write a letter to a friend in Chicago, assuming you want to write the letter in a somewhat proper American way. There are bloody differences! The spell checker will flag incorrect spelling when you enter the proper American equivalent to the British spelling schemes.

MS Office versions comes with different language packs for Word. Here, Word comes with English, French, and Spanish spell- and Grammar checkers if purchased in Canada. The US version might be again different as is probably the Australian edition. Now comes the question, "What if I want to write in German and don't have that language set available with my Word version?"

There are international "proofing tools" available for Word that can be of help. These special CD's come with usually 49 different language proofing tools. Some language packs contain a spell checker and a Grammar checker others; however, just have the spell checker for a particular language.

That's where the Custom Dictionary comes in! Keep in mind though, that a spelling dictionary (English or Custom) has nothing to do with the Grammar checker.

Your Custom Dictionary can serve as a container for foreign words, including odd spelled English words and your own inventions. Over time, this dictionary grows in size and content.

Then you decide, "It's time for an upgrade!"

Watch out!

The new Word version will install its new dictionaries and proofing tools, overwriting the old ones! This means that your 150,000 word custom dictionary, which you have painstakingly put together over the years, is gone. Word doesn't care about your spellings. It upgrades the word processor program according to the latest information available when the program package was written.

How can we prevent our Custom Dictionary from disappearing to La la Land?

Before you install the new Word version, back up your old Custom Dictionary and give it another name such as CustdictOct05.dic or whatever makes sense to you. Place this copy into a new Subdirectory in My Documents. Call the new subdirectory: My Dictionaries or something more meaningful. (a backup floppy will do too, no need for a CD burner, that dictionary isn't that big)

Why copy it to a new directory and especially into My Documents? Well, theoretically you can create a new Subdirectory anywhere on the hard drive, but Word will never look in the My Documents directory for a .dic document (file). So it's pretty safe there, plus, it's in an area where you would probably look first when looking for something important such as a dictionary or proofing tool other than in the suborder Word folders. (Folder is another name for subdirectory)

Another reason to dump the dictionary into My Documents would be a computer that is part of a corporation's IT infrastructure, University, Boeing, Lockheed, USAF etc., where the My Documents folder is regularly or automatically backed up by the system administrators and reloaded every time you log on to your Work station connected to a main server. (each and every company uses different backup and distribution schemes though)

How do I do all this?

Now comes the part where you need to pay attention. Although not difficult, you should only try this, knowing how to copy and renaming files or documents. (let somebody else do it for you, because it's always easier to blame somebody else, if things get really %#*&^$% and your pulse rate is suddenly spiking, strange noises escape your throat and you wish you knew somebody who can fix that NOW!)

First print this document and then let's find the Custom Dictionary:

This requires some "drilling" because the dictionary is hidden deep inside the subdirectory hierarchy.

Note: --> means go to or click on.

Use the Windows Explorer and not My Computer from the start up menu (although it seems to be the same, the windows look differently)

Click on: My Computer --> C: --> Documents and Settings --> Owner --> Application Data --> Microsoft --> Proof

Now you should see: CUSTOM.DIC

This is your current dictionary file!

Copy that file. (right click that file and chose Copy. You can also use the key combination Ctrl + C. Do NOT click on CUT!)

Go to the left window pane where you see all your files lined up and move up to My Documents. Click it and go to the top of the window and select File --> New --> Folder

This opens a small little folder box in My Documents with a gray background reading: New Folder and a flashing cursor.

Type: Dictionaries and hit Enter.

You just created a new folder (subdirectory)

Click on it.

You see a blank window on the right popping up.

Now go to Edit at the top and select: Paste or use the key combination: Ctrl + V

You should now see CUSTOM.DIC in that window.

Right click CUSTOM.DIC which you just copied and select Rename.

The file name will become gray with a flashing cursor.

Type a name or Dictionaryoct05.dic

Hit Enter.

Now your copy of the Custom Dictionary was renamed and is now safe from being overwritten by Word.

Now you can either keep working or upgrade your Office or Word Program.

This is a safe way of backing up your dictionary from time to time.

After an Office or Word upgrade start up Word.

Select: Open and find the "new" dictionary that came with the new Word Program. Do it the same way as mentioned above. Except now, you don't need to start the Windows Explorer. Word has a similar file interface.

After you found the CUSTOM.DIC file just click on it.

Word will now load the dictionary file.

Click open again.

Now you have to work your way back until you encounter My Documents again. Click it and find the folder My Dictionaries. Click it and then click on the dictionary file with the .dic ending.

Word will now open a new window with the "old" dictionary in it.

Select Edit and Select all or use Ctrl +A

The text will go black on you. Now select Ctrl + C. You have now copied the entire old dictionary to the Clipboard.

Go to the top and select Window. Find the file CUSTOM.DIC and select it.

Word has now switched back to the new dictionary file which was loaded first.

Go all the way down the list of words until you get to the last entry.

Put your cursor before the last word on the list and press the key: End After this hit Enter

Now your cursor is at the beginning of a new line.

Use the key combination: Ctrl + V

Now word has pasted the the old dictionary into the new one.

Use Ctrl + A again and select the entire document.

Go to Table and click on Sort ...

A window will pop up and there you select Paragraph and in the Type field select Text as well as Ascending.

Click on Okay.

After a moment you'll see that everything is listed in alphabetical order.

What's left to do is to delete all double entries and the ones you know for sure are misspelled. After this is all done click Safe.

Now you new dictionary has been updated with all the words that had been stored in the old dictionary.

Now you can safely get out of Word, knowing that more word power has been added to your fingertips.

I hope that'll work for you. As it was fun for me to write this all up ...

Many other programs have their own dictionary files. Do a search on the hard drive to find them and then you can do the same in updating or safe keeping them.

Ad adstra.
