The Amazon River town of Iquitos.  Our flight from Lima, Peru, landed here and this was our port of embarkation for La Esmerelda.

A pond well populated by giant lily pads.  These lily pads are able to support the weight of a small child!

Here we are fishing for piranhas.  This is an activity which should be done very carefully.

Giant Lily Pads.

Here are some of the piranhas we caught.  We ate them later, and found them to taste like our own sac-au-lait fish, which is to say very good.  The crew presented us with the cleaned skeletons of the fish heads, complete with razor-sharp teeth.

"Hanging basket" orioles nests in a tree next to where we moored for the night.
