Required Testing
California High School Exit Examinations (CAHSEE) in English-Language Arts Section 1, English-Language Arts Section 2, and Mathematics are required of each student prior to receiving a high school diploma. ** This requirment begins with the class of 2004. Students that take the CAHSEE are not required to take the Compotency Examinations. Competency Examinations in Reading Comprehension, Written Expression, and Arithmetic are required of each student prior to receiving a high school diploma. **Student in the class of 2002 and 2003 will take Compotency Examinations and not the CAHSEE.
Where can students get extra help? Mr. Stathakis, in room 61 is available, at lunch to any student that wants extr help toward passing the competency tests. In addition there is tutoring in the livrary and copies of a practice math competency in the counseling office. Please take advantage of these opportunities.

Principal's Distinguished Honor Roll Students can qualify for the Principal's Distinguished Honor Roll each semester by earning a 3.8 academic grade point average in UC's "a-f" required courses determined by semester grades.
Principal's Honor Roll Students can qualify for the Principal's Honor Roll by earning a 3.5 District or academic grade point average at each semester.
Distinguished Dons The objective of their program is that these young men and women should be "well-rounded students who best represent the ideals of the Santa Barbara High School and are role models for he school community. This honor is based on Overall scholarship and individual department performance, Service to school and community, Citizenship in school and community, Leadership in school and community, and Activities in school and community.
California Scholarship Federation (CSF) The California Scholarship Federation promotes high standards of scholarship and citizenship. A student must apply for CSF membership each semester that he/she qualifies. Qualification is based on the previous semester's grades in specific courses. (A high GPA in college preparatory courses does not automatically admit or enroll the student.) Students who qualify for CSF must fill out an application and submit it to the Principal's Office along with the $2.50 membership fee each qualifying semester. For the "Life Member" or "Seal Bearer" status accorded to graduating seniors, students must qualify a minimum of four out of six semesters in grades 10, 11, 12, at least one of which must be in the senior year.
National Honor Society Membership is open to all students who have attended SBHS for at least one semester and who have a district grade point average of 3.5. Student who meet the scholastic require are then evaluated by the faculty committee on the basis of leadership, service, and character. There is a $2.50 fee for membership, which can be paid in the Principal's Office.
Alternative Education Options
Adult Education @ Santa Barbara High School Program for students that are behind in units and need particular classes to graduate on time. Students meet Monday through Thursday, from 3:00 – 5:00 in room 43. Seniors have priority, then Juniors. After 6:00pm you can contact a representative @ 687-0812.
La Cuesta High School An alternative Education Program offering a variety of instructional options to meet the educational needs of students. Students are referred for different reasons. A large portion of students who attend La Cuesta have fallen behind in units and are trying to make up units faster than what the traditional high school setting offers. Students who should not be referred to La Cuesta are: special education students or any students with learning disabilities, ESL students, ninth grade students, students who need A-F courses for college, students who are almost 18 years old and non-attending. La Cuesta High School Independent Study There must be a compelling reason for placement in Independent Study. Independent Study students attend school for one hour a week. They are given a packet of materials that they are able to work on at home and then meet with an instructor on their given week. Reasons for enrollment might be, but are not limited to: Illness or diagnosed medical reasons, full time job, pregnancy or parenting, family or career obligations that require student to be out of school regularly (e.g. modeling, acting, caring for a family member who is ill.) La Cuesta High School Middle College Program: Students who fit the Middle College profile are those students that are more mature than other high school students, have strong academic potential, want to learn, but feel that others students in classes disrupt learning, doesn’t fit into the high school setting, wants to move beyond high school and make a commitment to college, has completed all (most) life science and physical science requirements, has completed all (most) math requirements. Santa Barbara City College’s Continuing Education Program (SBCC and Adult Education) If your primary goal is to complete your high school diploma as quickly as possible, Continuing Education may be the program for you. There are two reasons to enroll in this program: (1) If you are ready for college level work and would like earn units toward you high school diploma AND a college degree, contact Santa Barbara City College’s credit division @ 965-0581 x 2285. (2) If you would like to take or prepare to take the GED exam, contact Continuing Education (the Wake Center) @ 964-6853 x340 or (Schott Center) @ 687-0812 x223.
The California Proficiency Examination Anyone wishing to complete high school and move onto college or a career may earn the equivalent of a high school diploma by proving proficiency in basic skills through the California High School Proficiency Examination. Proficiency is defined as the average performance of the second-semester senior in a California public high school. The exam is open to anyone 16 or older, whether enrolled in school or not. Anyone under 16 can take the CHSPE if they have are in the second semester of the tenth grade. For more information call: (916)383-9506.
General Education Diploma (GED) Anyone who is 18 years of age or older may take this exam. The exam gives examinees a completion of high school certificate.
Summer School @ Santa Barbara High School Students can make up 10 units each summer by taking summer school courses at Santa Barbara High School. Incoming 8th grade students are able to take courses at the high school before their ninth grade year. For more information contact Santa Barbara High School at 966-9101.
University of California at Berkeley Correspondence Program Students can earn units toward high school graduation by taking courses through the University of California at Berkeley Correspondence program.
Laurel Springs High School Located in Ojai, this alternative high school offers a number of alternative settings that are designed to meet the needs of diverse student populations. If you need to make up units or would be comfortable with an alternative schedule, this might be the placement for you.
UCSB or Santa Barbara City College Surrounding colleges offer coursework for high school students during the summer and during the school year. Coursework taken at UCSB and SBCC are transferable to Santa Barbara High School
