Doreen's Snowmen

Made from recycled plastic bottles

For each snowman you will need:

An empty mineral water plastic bottle (I chose a 2.5 bottle which had waves and ridges in the plastic moulding perfect for a snowman  shape)

White acrylic paint

Orange acrylic paint

PVA glue (diluted with water)

Sand for mixing into the paint

A 1" brush and a sponge

Two containers for mixing

A pair of Woolen socks

5 black buttons

A black permanent marker

Twigs sprayed silver

1 Rawl plug

Decorative items

Rags for wiping hands and surface

Start by cutting off the top part of the bottle above the label (see next picture)

In a container mix some PVA glue with a little water and brush this mixture all around the bottle. Let dry.

In a separate container mix white acrylic paint with coarse or fine sand to add texture and paint the outside of the bottle with this mixture.  Let dry.

Add another coat of this acrylic paint (with sand), this time sponging it onto the bottle - this layer will eliminate any brush marks and will add more texture.  Let dry.

At this stage this what your bottle will look like...

Once dry, bunch the top part of the bottle inwards to shape the top part of the head, leaving the bottom part intact for the snowman's face.

If you are making more than one snowmen, it is easier to make them all at once, doing one step at a time as in a production line...

Glue on the 2 buttons for the eyes and  3 down the front - when dry you can highlight the eyes and buttons with a black marker.

Draw the mouth.

Add the nose by painting the rawl plug orange (unless you have another item that will do for the nose) - glue it on and leave your snowman on his back at this stage until the nose is stuck on.

In order that your snowman will not tilt over, you can at this stage fill it up with pebbles or a mixture of polyfilla or cement.

Dressing up your snowman:

Cut the bottom part of one sock off leaving the heel on the top part. This will be the hat - place the ribbed ankle around the snowman's head and glue in place (if it fits snuggly you can eliminate using the glue).  You can either use the other sock to use as a scarf or you could use any other woolen or felt fabric to drape around the snowman's neck as a scarf.

Finally decorate the hat, glue some twigs to one side and add any festive decoration.

Make more than one............
