DOUGH CRAFT

Christmas Bread Basket

To make this dough, you'll need:

• 4 cups flour (unsifted)
• 1 cup salt
• 1 1/2 cups water
• Disposable pie plate

            Making the dough

Combine flour, salt and water in a mixing bowl.
Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead
until smooth, adding a little more water if it is
too stiff to work. The dough tends to dry
on your hands so it is helpful to have a dampened
dishcloth near your work area.

            Shaping the Bread Basket

Roll the dough out from centre to edges to about

1/8 inch thick on an area covered with foil or parchment.

Cut into 3/4 inch strips with a knife or pastry wheel.

Turn pie pan upside down and lay strips at 3/4 inch

intervals. Fold back alternate strips as you weave the

strips crosswise.
Make sure you trim lattice evenly around outer rim of pie plate.
Add a decorative rim and bake at 300 until hard.
Turn over to bake the underside if needed.

To protect, brush with two coats of varnish letting dry completely between coats.

To further embellish the basket, you may weave in a red ribbon
around the top.

Use to keep dry food in like bread rolls, cookies or crackers.  To clean dust off any crumbs - do not immerse in water.
