Water Polo?????
but where do the horses go?
Apparently a genuine misconception about this slightly obscure sport!
But it's fair enough, because I knew nothing about water polo before I started playing in 2000. In this section, I have written an introduction to the sport as well as a quite comprehensive collection of UYSWC results and match reports. If you've played water polo with me, I have a water polo gallery, which you may feature in!
Water Polo Basics
This is a brief introduction to water polo and it's rules and tactics. The international governing body for water polo is FINA, check their website for a detailed rule book.
Teams
The game involves 2 teams of up to 13 players - 7 of which must be in the pool at any given time. Of these 7 players, one is a designated goal-keeper and the other 6 are outfield players.
The pool
Water polo is like football in that each team defends a goal at their end of the pool, whilst trying to score in the opposition's goal. Boundary rules relating to corners, goal-throws and throw-ins are similar to football. All are taken from in the water. Officially, water polo is played in all-deep pools that are between 25-30 metres in length. Goals are typically 0.9m high. If a pool has a shallow end, the shallow end goal will be 2.5m high to compensate for the fact that the shallow end goal-keeper may stand on the bottom. No other player may touch the bottom of the pool during active play.
Play
At the start of a game both teams line up along their goal line. The referee signals start of play by sounding a whistle and drops the ball into the water on the half-way line. Once in possession, a team has 35 seconds in which to shoot (as in basketball). All players (except the goal-keepers) may only touch the ball with one hand at a time. They must also not push the ball underwater when tackled - a player doing so will concede a free-throw even if he/she took the ball under as a result of getting ducked!
Substitutions
Water polo is similar to basketball in that rolling substitutions are allowed, which means that players are constantly being replaced. The only restriction is that a player must leave the pool in the correct place before his/her replacement may enter the water.
Fouls
Ordinary fouls, including "ball under", standing up and playing the ball with two hands, are punishable by a free-throw. Some ordinary fouls may be punishable by a penalty if they take place within 5m of the defender's goal and prevent a clear scoring opportunity. Players may be excluded for more serious fouls, such as impeding a player. Exclusion and penalty fouls are recorded against a player. Should a player have three of these fouls recorded against them, they are fouled out of the game and may play no further part. However, they may be replaced by a substitute. The most serious fouls such as brutality (striking) or dissent are punishable by a sending-off.

Here is a small section devoted to the University of York Water Polo Team(s).
I was involved with UYSWC for over 5 years and served as captain of the Men's Water Polo team for the 2002-2003 season. I am still a bit of a hanger-on and pop along to training sessions when I can. I have some great memories of the club, so I have decided to keep an archive of results and match reports below. If any former team mates should stumble across this page, I hope that they will contact me via the link on my home page :o). Summer 2000: "Roses" Water Polo vs Lancaster(Home)
Lost 1-11
Following report presumably written by then Secretary Colin Hague:
After all the trouble we had gone through and all the effort that had been put into getting our new water polo goals painted, fixed and ready for action, it was with some disappointment that we had to resort to using traffic cones, duct tape and broom handles for goals! It did not, however, put a damper on the effort that was put into the game. The game was played with mixed teams since Lancaster did not have enough players for single-sexed teams. It was fast and furious and saw the ball buried in the net a bit too often. Lancaster were expected to be the stronger team as their men's team had reached the BUSA quarter finals and it didn't take long before the visitors took control. York, who have very little match experience, were soon trailing, but were always working hard to penetrate Lancaster's defence. However, York continued to lose the ball in vital situations, which the opposition took advantage of, extending their lead further. A tiny glimpse of relief came in the 2nd period when Colin took a nice pass from Ange and finally managed to hit the net to the great appreciation of the rest of the team and the home support. York conceded fewer goals in the 3rd as Lancs relaxed their offence after taking a 10-1 lead, but their defence made sure York did not get the opportunity to reduce the deficit. The 4th saw Lancs play a full women's team, which gave York the chance to get a better grip on the game. York had many good chances in this period, but it was never meant to be. After hitting the crossbar, goal posts goalie and everywhere around the goal except in the net, the final quarter remained goalless. The game ended 1-11, a disappointing final result, but one that provided York with valuable match experience. A character building game indeed![Up]

Autumn 2001: Swimming Gala and Polo vs Bradford Uni (Home)
Men Drew 7-7
Women Won 8-2
The Women's team dominated Bradford to secure an 8-2 victory, whilst the men's team got over a shaky start to tie 7-7 in the final period - well done to both squads (and to the swimmers for their 139-80 victory). This match was notable for the first competitive use of our new goal posts (beating the previous use of cones, floats and sticky tape!)
Spring 2002: Water Polo vs Durham Uni (Home)
Men Lost 0-6
Women Drew 2-2
Mixed Won 6-5
Regrettably I was absent from this meeting, but a highly successful day was had by those that made it: The Women's team again showed their class holding the Durham team to a 2-2 draw, whilst the men suffered a 0-6 defeat. With extra time available a mixed match was played, where the York crew managed to scrape a 6-5 victory (due, no doubt to the presence of the women in the side ;-) ).
Summer 2002: "Roses" Water Polo vs Lancaster (Away)
Lost 19-5
2002 saw the combined sports teams of York head over the Pennines to meet Lancaster University in the 38th Roses competition. Although the weekend saw York claim their first away victory in 10 years, us polo players can't claim to have assisted in the famous victory. Playing in a pool with no shallow end was the first shock, and the amount of times I had to collect the ball from the back of my goal was the other! One mixed match was played with full 7 minute quarters and full time saw a rather one sided score of 19-5 to Lancs! Still, I consider it to be a great deal better than the reciprocal fixture in 2001, which we lost 1-11 at home and were unable to make any headway even when Lancaster fielded a full womens side for the final quarter!
Summer 2002: Water Polo Friendly vs Leeds Uni (Home) (My first in charge!)
Men Lost 3-24
Mixed Drew 3-3
On Sunday 9th of June we hosted a waterpolo competition against Leeds University. As Leeds only brought 2 women with them, we decided to play a full men’s match then play a mixed game with players from each university shared between the teams. Only 7 York men showed up, so we were forced to play for the entire match of four 'seven minute' quarters. Leeds were a
larger, more physical team and had enough men for three substitutes, but we faced up to them bravely. York started defending
the shallow end and put man-on-man pressure on the Leeds players. Our defence didn’t make things easy for them, but they
scored several good goals leaving us down after the first period.
As the second period got underway, we were starting to tire and Leeds continued to come at us time and time again, often
hitting us on a break with more attackers than we had men back. Their finishing was admirable too, as Pete was rarely able to
make a save. However, Steve worked hard in a centre forward position and earned us a penalty which he easily converted,
this glimmer of hope was followed by a through ball to Steve, who then once again, beat the Leeds keeper.
We entered the third period determined to defend harder. Chris played well in a centre back position and was all over their
forwards, Ash rarely let anyone slip away from him. Despite having Chris or Ash hanging off their necks, the two Leeds
forwards managed to score three back hand goals - Ollie was unlucky to be beaten by these shots as no-one really expected
them! At the other end of the pool, Pete managed to get two shots on target, but they were no problem for the Leeds keeper,
and Steve completed his hat-trick.
The fourth quarter saw Pete go back in goal, to allow Ollie to move forward into a mid-field position, where he was able to
make a couple of long-range efforts at the Leeds goal. Tom continued to operate down the wings of the pool, doing a huge
amount of swimming and trying to get crosses in to our forwards. Matt did sterling work in the mid-field, attempting to
advance the ball to Steve, who battled hard against the Leeds defence, but even with Steve and Matt playing as 2 centre
forwards, we were no threat to the Leeds defence. Matt’s frustration lead to him being sin-binned (tut tut!). Leeds however
continued to punish us on the break and used their advantages over us to lave us 24-3 down at the final whistle. Never mind
lads, well played anyway!
Six York women showed up (Alice, Amy, Jo, Karen, Rosie and Ruthie) and they were divided between 2 teams with the
Leeds women. The men made up the teams to full 7-a-side strength. The match was again four 7 minute periods and was
played at a more relaxed, friendly pace than the previous game. The York women showed themselves to be as good as the
men (at least!) by scoring three goals past a Leeds keeper! Rosie scored twice for York team and Amy lobbed the
keeper after drawing him out of the goal mouth to score for the whites. The game finished 3-3 and was a good, well-natured
game.[Up]

Autumn 2002: Water Polo Friendly vs Leeds Uni (Home)
Men Lost 1-17
Women Lost 0-17
York University Men’s Water Polo team took on Leeds University in their home pool. A full side of 13 players turned up to take on Leeds (who only had eight players). York started bravely yet conceded a couple of early goals to fast breaks from the Leeds team. Unfortunately this proved to be an omen of what was to come for the rest of the match. York tried to tighten up defensively by playing two centre backs and trying to close the Leeds team down man-on-man. After only two training sessions the York men were not as disciplined as the Leeds team, which was particularly noticeable in the midfield where too many turnovers were forced by close marking from Leeds. Leeds flourished on the resulting counter-attacks and York found themselves several goals adrift by the end of the first period. That is not to say that York made it easy for Leeds with the goal-keeper standing up bravely to the attacks and some good defending prevented Leeds pulling off some of the “flashy” shots seen in the last encounter. The game progressed in a similar fashion with York striving to advance the ball through the mid-field and to move the ball along the wings. However, the strong Leeds defence ensured that these efforts came to nothing. The game looked like it would end scoreless for York until late in the third period when we got something to cheer about when we scored from a high-lob
which took the Leeds keeper by surprise giving us our only goal of the game.
At least we kept them under 20 points this time! Final score 17-1.
The women's team also played, but fared slightly less well, loosing 17-0.
Autumn 2002: Men's BUSA Water Polo 1st Round. Group: Durham, Leeds, YORK (home)
Leeds 5 - 4 Durham
Durham 14 - 3 York
York 0 - 12 Leeds
2002 saw our first foray into the world of the BUSA water polo championships. We hosted our first round group games in a tournament involving us, Leeds and Durham. The first match was a bruising encounter between Leeds and Durham with Leeds emerging victorious with a 5-4 margin in their favour. The Durham vs York match saw a heavy defeat for the hosts, who only managed to score 3 against Durham's 14. Durham scored 7 goals in each half, whilst Dom scored York's only goal of the 1st period with Steve and Sam adding one each in the 2nd. The final match was even more gutting with Leeds beating York 12-0 (at least they score less each time!). A good day was had by all, and Leeds progressed to the next round in style! York Team: Chris, Dom, Andrew, Mark, Tom, Steve, Ollie, Ash, David, Lyndon, Jay, Sam, Lance. Pete unable to play due to illness :o( - obviously that's why we lost ;o)!
Spring 2003: Men's and Women's Water Polo vs Durham (Away)
Men Lost 15-2
Women Lost too
We didn't make any friends with our coach driver on this trip due to lateness and post-match alcohol consumption! Due to being forced to share the lift with the ladies footy team, we arrived in Durham a few hours early, so most of use went to the Golden Arches of McDonald's for some pre-match "nutrition". Then some of us followed the lead of the Wright brothers (Matt and John) to try and get into the castle. However, our "invasion" was prevented by a diligent warden :O(. As for the game, we managed to tie the final quarter 2-2 with goals from Dave and Jay. Unfortunately, Durham just managed to beat us by out-scoring us 13-0 in the first three periods! The ladies team also faced defeat, but I forgot the score (let's just call it 1-0, and save some face!). Men's team: Matt, Tom, Ollie, John M, Dave, Dan, Pete (c), Steve, Jay, John W.
Spring 2003: Men's and Women's Water Polo vs Leeds (Away)
Men Lost 17-0
Women Lost 10-2
This was our first visit to Leeds and our second away match in a week (life is tough on the road!). Alice led us all to the Leeds Met pool with the help of a couple of buses and a nice Arriva train that wasn’t striking! When we got to the pool we were surprised by how small it was – barely a paddling pool in size and a “deep end” that could have been in breach of the Trade Descriptions Act. It even had fancy troughs along the side and proper flights of stairs in the corners to add a little danger to the experience!
Men took to the water first after agreeing to play 5-a-side so that there was room for manoeuvre. The game started at a frantic pace – defence was tight by both teams due to the short length of the pool. True to form, Leeds were first on the score sheet. Matt was his usual aggressive self in goal, but lost a chunk from his thumb in the process – forcing him to play the rest of the match with a big wad of tape over it! After a tough quarter York found themselves 4 goals adrift. The second quarter was similar, Pete and Sam managed to get some shots off, but it was Ollie who put York on the score-sheet. Sadly, this was York’s only goal of the game, despite having Tom and Lance working the wings and some good work in the middle by the “Wright Brothers”. York played more defensively than usual as Leeds didn’t score as many from breaks as they usually do – Steve, John and Dan worked hard at the back to help Chris in goal, but it was a credit to everyone on the team that they got back to help out. We forced Leeds to work harder than they usually do, but this wasn’t reflected in the 17-1 final score.
The women took to the water next under the watchful referees Pete (York) and Pete (Leeds), who were much taken aback by the aggression on display! York started well and only conceded 2 goals in the first quarter and one of them was an unfortunate penalty. These two goals were cancelled out by a goal from Ange – who was a constant threat to the Leeds goal, and also a good effort from Rachel. York fared slightly less well in the second period – conceding 5 goals. After a half time talk form both of York’s captains the team took to the water with better focus. Defence was clearly improved as Leeds only managed to score once, thanks to defending from Ruth, Helen and Kate. Alice and Ange continued to press forward, but were not rewarded by a goal. Ange was often double-teamed, which left Devina free on the right wing, but she was unable to beat the Leeds keeper despite some good efforts. The York women were obviously annoying one member of the Leeds team, who was often guilty of costume pulling and dissent – leading to two ejections (the second for throwing a ball and some verbal abuse at the York referee!). The final quarter was better natured and saw Leeds score a final 2 goals and also the grumpy Leeds girl took on Ange and came off worst ;-). Final score: 10-2 and the women once again out-do the men!
Next was a nice walk to a nearby pub to eat mountains of sausages and chips – thanks very much Leeds! Then it was bus, train, bus back home! Thanks for playing guys!
Men: Chris, Tom, Ollie, John W, John M, Pete (c), Matt, Sam, Lance, Steve, Dan.
Women: Kate, Ange, Rachel, Alice (c), Devina, Helen, Ruth.
Summer 2003: "Roses" Water Polo vs Lancaster (Home)
Otherwise known as Pete's last game in charge :-(
Men Lost 4-6
Women Lost 9-11
Men’s Team: Andy, Chris, Dan, Jay, John M, John W, Lance, Mark, Matt, Pete (c), Sam, Steve & Tom.
Being used to being on the receiving end of heavy defeats, York Men’s water polo team was surprised that this game was still within their reach late in the 4th quarter. York won the toss and began the game defending the deep end.
The game started at a frantic pace, with both teams having some good possession. Lancaster opened the scoring in the first two minutes and, despite some solid defence from York, managed to beat York keeper Matt Wright a further two times to leave York 0-3 down at the end of the 1st quarter.
The change of ends saw York begin to make an impact on the score sheet as a break down the left wing and a fine cross resulted in a good goal for Sam Cheesman. York continued to play well with Tom Martin and Lance Sugar pushing the ball down the wings. A good pass from the midfield found captain Pete Spencer lightly marked in front of the goal, resulting in a second for York. York found it easier to defend the shallow end only conceding one goal from a back-handed Lancastrian shot. Good defence from Dan Harris and John Wright and some good reflex saves from a warmed up Wright in the York goal prevented any further additions. As York piled on the pressure they were rewarded by several Lancaster ejections, but were unable to capitalise on the temporary advantage of numbers. York thought they’d added a third at the end of the quarter as a cross-pool shot from Jay Allnutt appeared to hit the inside of the goal frame, but the goal was not awarded. A missed penalty soon after summed up York’s frustration, but they were buoyed by outscoring Lancaster 2-1 by the end of the 2nd quarter.
York raced into the 3rd quarter and hurled shot after shot at the shallow end goal. Lancaster picked up several ejections and some good ball handling from Mark Macdonald and Steve Viney led to Andrew McMaster adding York’s third. Despite the pressure against them Lancaster added a single goal to maintain their advantage. York were awarded a penalty, which was easily put away by Allnutt.
The 4th quarter saw York 4-5 down and chasing a draw and even a possible victory. McMaster ran the York attack, with support from behind by Chris Wilson and John Mynott. But York couldn’t find the elusive goal despite a promising break down the left from Viney and a penalty being awarded to York for Lancaster fielding a player who’d picked up his third and final personal foul. Lancaster scored the only goal of the quarter a minute from time, which effectively sealed their victory, despite York playing their best game ever. Final score 4-6.
Women's Team: Kate, Devina, Lorna, Rachel, Alice (c), Karen, Helen, Angie, Hannah, Amy, Ruth, Jo, Becky. Thanks to Alice for the report!
The match began with a rather tentative attack from both teams who seemed to be sussing out their opponents; we'd not played Lancaster since last year and had no idea of their current form. York got the first attempt at goal soon after the start, but unfortunately it caught the crossbar and the resulting goal throw set Lancaster up for their first goal of the match. The first period finished 3-2 to Lancs, with goals from Alice and Amy. The second quarter saw Lancs get further into their stride and score 4 goals, sending the York girls into a bit of a sulk. Goals from Ange and Amy kept York in it and the score was 7-4 at half-time. A team shuffle and tactical chat at half-time meant that the third quarter kicked off in York's favour and 3 goals meant that the period ended with York trailing by a single goal (7-8). With both teams totally exhausted, the fourth quarter was fuelled by pure adrenalin - everyone could feel palpable victory just minutes away and no-one was prepared to give up until the final whistle. Goals from Ange and Alice's fourth (which made her the day's leading scorer) gave York renewed hope of success, with the score finely poised at 9-9. However, in the last 2 minutes York could not stop exhaustion from taking over. Marking let the team down and Lancs scored the final 2 goals of the day to take the final score to 11-9.
Summer 2003: Friendly vs Bradford (Away)
Men Drew 3-3
Our first match in a while with one of our nearest "enemies" was a very close affair! Bradford had some top quality players and we found it hard to contain them. The game had a little controversy and narrowly avoided becoming violent! Still, York piled on the pressure and easily kept the pressure on the Bradford goal, and doggedly defended their own! The minutes were ticking by in the final quarter with York 3-2 down attacking the deep end remorselessly. Eventually we forced a corner that was taken nice and high by Jay to me at the back post -
the simplest of touches put the ball away and tied the game for us 3-3 just in time for the final whistle! Phew![Up]

Autumn 2003: Friendly vs Bradford (Home)
Men Won 12-1
Bradford brought their new intake over to us for a nice friendly match. Ten York Men turned out for the game: Mark (c), Pete, Dan, Giles, Dom, Sam, Chris, Mathais, Jay & Lance . This was a memorable game for us because we not only reached double figures AND won we ALSO won by a margin of 11!!!
Our defence was tight giving them only a single goal, and we had plenty of chances - I think at least half the team were on the score sheet, though Giles was clearly the top scorer, followed by Dom I think. I liked it because I opened the scoring after the ball landed in front of me when I had LOADS of room
in front of the goal, which was put away by a turning lob to the top corner - sweet! Final score 12-1 to the Yorkies!
Autumn 2003: Men's BUSA Water Polo 1st Round Group (2B): Edinburgh, Durham, Sterling & York (Away @ At Stirling)
York 3 - 10 Edinburgh
York 2 - 7 Stirling
York 4 - 13 Durham
Unfortunately we were missing some key players for this trip, but nevertheless the rest of us met at York train station at 7am, and managed to blag 1st Class seats on the GNER to Edinburgh. Then we got over to Stirling, and found out we were about 2 hours early and there was no where to get food from! Stirling have a proper water polo pool - all deep, with floating goal cages. We had proper referees and score board and everything! Our first game was against Edinburgh, which we lost 3-10. Next up were Stirling and we did better going down 7-2. By the time Durham cam along we were knackered (I think they were too) so the game was more open, but we lost 13-4. I sneaked in at the back post to push in Jay's long pass from the wing. Other than that Giles got most of our goals - we'd have done a lot worse without him there to carry us!
Team: Mark (c), Dan, Dan, Giles, Jay, Chris, Pete, Sam, Dave (and maybe another 1 I can't remember!)
Summer 2004: Friendly vs Bradford (Away)
The UYSWC water polo teams indulged in a spot of Wednesday afternoon sport by taking a short road trip to Bradford for a pre-Roses fixture. The 60-seat coach may have been a bit excessive to transport the 20 or so players though! The first bit of news we heard on arrival was that when Bradford met Lancaster in the 2003-04 BUSA league the result was a 3-3 draw, so we knew that a good performance against Bradford would make us the team to beat in Roses.
Team: Mark (c), Dom, Sam, Christian. Mattiaus, Pete, Lance, Giles, Chris, Wasted Dan and Dave)
Summer 2004: Roses Water Polo vs Lancaster (Away)
Women:Lancaster 6 - 1 York
Things looked good when York opened the scoring, but it wasn't to be for the York women despite a lot of effort.
Men:Lancaster 4 - 12 York!
York had most of the possession in the 1st quarter and had plenty of shooting opportunities but were denied variously by defenders, keeper and goal posts. Giles opened the scoring, but the lead didn't last long. The first quarter ended tied at 1-1. We got a quick goal at the start of the second, just to see Lancaster score from the half-way mark from the re-start. I don't think anyone noticed it until it went past Big Chris! We had plenty more chances, but we only had a 3-2 advantage at half time. After the change of ends, we had found our range and the goals started adding up. Our defence was strong and our passing continued to open up their defence. I scored from the 7 metre line, and the second half also saw goals from Christian, Dom and (obviously) Giles. We out-scored Lancaster by 9 goals to 2 in the 3rd and 4th quarters to leave us victorious at 4-12!!! And so ended the most successful season for the men's water polo team![Up]

This helped York to find their rhythm and soon more goals followed from Giles and another from Dom. Bjorn scored his first goal for York helping York to a 5-3 advantage at half time. Following a rallying call from Mark at half time York pressed home their advantage scoring an other 5 goals in the deep end goal. Bradford only managed to score a single goal in reply, and had defensive problems that earned them a double ejection helping York to a 10-4 victory.
