Henry Hagger
Many of the Hagg*r Researchers we are in touch with are descendents of Henry Hagger.
Henry was born in Therfield, Hertfordshire in 1804, being christened on 16th September 1804. His parents were Edward Hagger and Sarah Reynolds, then we hit a bit of a brick wall. Edward was one of two cousins both named Edward Hagger and both born about 1763. In 1789, one Edward married Sarah and the other Edward married Ann Ward. However, we do not know which one actually married Sarah.
Edward and Sarah had six children, Henry being the youngest. Henry, like many Hagger’s who came from Therfield was an Agricultural or Farm Labourer. The only exception was that on the marriage certificate of his son Arthur in 1883, when Henry had been dead 20 years, he was shown as an Engineer.
Henry had two wives, the first was Ann Anderson (probably born in Therfield, as that is where she was christened in 1811). Henry and Ann had five children – James, Charlotte, Catherine, George and Elizabeth. Ann died in 1841 and in 1843 Henry married his second wife, Eliza Gilby, and had another four children – Alfred, William Henry, Clara and Arthur. Henry appears to have lived in Therfield all his life and he died in 1863. Eliza was born in Buckland and continued to live in Therfield after Henry’s death until she died in 1897. Eliza had one child just four months before her marriage to Henry - Mary Ann Gilby. Henry may well have been Mary Ann’s father as in the 1851 census she was shown as Mary Ann Hagger, daughter of Henry, but at her marriage in 1864, she was, once again, Mary Ann Gilby.
The following researchers with whom we are in touch are descended from Henry as follows:
John Hagger & Pamela Kimpton – from the eldest son, James, from Henry’s first marriage
Martin Hagger, Brian Field, Trevor Harvey Beryl Ireland, Carol Lovegrove, Wendy Ford & Wendy Warren – from the eldest son, Alfred, from Henry’s second marriage
Andrea Humphrey & Julie Humphries – from William Henry, a son of Henry’s second marriage
Peter Hagger – from Arthur, Henry’s youngest son.
We are also in contact with the following descended from Henry’ brothers:
Jean Kelly – from Thomas (1780 – 1866)
Doreen Oakman, Linda Warner & Tony Warner - from John (1793-1868)
You are able to trace the line from Henry to modern times at the web site owned by Martin Hagger at www.hagger.org. We are grateful to Martin as the information for the above profile has been taken from this site.
