Welcome

A warm welcome to this first issue of ‘Hagger ons’, a newsletter to keep you informed about the Hagger One Name Study.

First I should explain what is a One Name Study is.

The Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) sets the following criteria for anyone wishing to undertake a one name study:

1.  You must agree to collect all references to your registered surname(s) on a worldwide basis.  A study restricted to one country, part of a country, or the descendents of a particular individual does not meet the criteria.

2.  You must agree to deal with all reply-paid enquiries and emails that you receive relating to your registered surname(s).

For the moment, I have just registered the names Hagger and Haggar, but will collect information on other variants as well and may register other names as the study develops.  Therefore, at the moment I am only obliged to deal with Hagger and Haggar.

You may ask why just these two variants, - mainly because in research already done we know Hagger and Haggar have
Peter Hagger, the owner of the Hagger One Name Study with his wife Christine and their four grandsons.
Therfield Parish Church, Hertfordshire, England.  Many Hagger’s were baptised, married and buried in this Church.  Hagger’s were still  being baptised there in the 1960’s although no Hagger’s now live in the
Progress so far

The study only got under way after Martin Hagger and  I attended a seminar organised by the GOONS in early November 2003.

We have started collecting England and Wales births, deaths and marriage (BDM) registration information.  Martin had already made a start some years earlier by manually listing all the BDM information on Hagg*r’s in the GRO indexes.  So far, we have the information for births from 1837, when records started, until 1940.  Some of these are still in digital image form and others are now transcribed into Excel files.

The final stage is to load the Excel files into a piece of software called Custodian.  This is a specialist relational database especially designed for storing the data collected as part of a one name study.

Therefore, I can now handle queries on Hagg*r births from 1837 to 1940.  We have also tried to capture information on other variants as well including  Hagar, Hager, Haggerwood and a few others.
