There is no agreed definitive answer as to where the Hagger name came from, although we believe the most likely answer is that it came from the name Hacker, which would be the name for a wood cutter in what is now Germany. We can look at relatively recent data as to the geographical origins of Hagg*r and this is easily done using the 1881 census.
This is not very conclusive as to the origins as we know from our own family research that migration had started before 1881 with movement specifically from Hertfordshire to Middlesex and Essex.
We have shown the separate figures for some of the variants yet we know for certain that the name Haggar and Hagger have been interchangeable.
Our theory on migration is supported by analysing Hagger births from 1837 to 1859 when 29% of Hagger births were registered in Hertfordshire with only 20% in Essex and 18% in Middlesex.
