Peter's Pottery

What is Pottery?

A cup, a bowl or a plate made from clay and fired in a kiln is pottery. It could be either made by hand or by machine, or combinations of both. For example, it could be modelled from clay, thrown on a wheel and fashioned by hand, or it could be turned in moulds using a jig and jolly, It could also be made from slip poured into a mould, or press moulded.
Pieces of pottery can be called ceramics but this term also includes many industrial products such as electrical insulators. Pottery of a high quality is often called ceramic art. Whereas a simple flower vase is called pottery, if it was shaped or decorated in an unusual way, it might be called ceramic art.
There are many distinctions, such as the type of clay (earthenware, stoneware, porcelain), the type of firing (wood, gas, oil, electric), and the style of design, including the type of glaze or decoration. There are also many distinctions made according to the origins, the method or the purpose of the potter.
