Japanese New Religions in Global Perspective, edited by Peter B. Clarke, sociologist of religion (Curzon Press, 2000).
Some Japanese new religious movements have made considerable inroads into the religious and cultural life of societies outside Japan and other have hardly expanded beyond the confines of an already existing Japanese community. The reasons for the success or failure of Japanese religions are major themes in the volume.
The attraction of 'this-worldly' rewards in the Japanese new religions is a theme which recurres in several contributions particularly relating to Sekai Kyusei Kyo and other movements in Brazil. Of further interest is the ideal of the causes of sickness and spiritual healing employed by movements such as Tensho Kotai Jungu Kyou, Mahikari and Sekai Kyusei Kyo. Finally, millenarian dimensions of Japanese new religions are also explored as a means of recruitment and as an ideology of change.
The works will be of central relevance to students and scholars of Japanese Studies and Religious Studies, and will also be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists and historians, and to anyone with a desire to understand more about the phenomenon of new religions in our society.
Book Description by the Publisher:
'This book provides new research on a wide range of aspects of Japanese new religions outside Japan, considering in particular Europe, the Americas and Australia. Previous research and writing on Japanese religions has been confined to the Japanese context. However, since the 1960s virtually every part of the world has seen the arrival and establishment of Japanese new religious movements, a process that has followed quickly on the heels of the most active period of Japanese economic expansion overseas.'
