'The New Evangelists: Recruitment, Methods and Aims of New Religious Movements'
Edited by Peter B. Clarke
Ethnographica (1987)
Synopsis:
With the growth of several new religious and quasi-religious movements, the word 'evangelisation' has, in recent years, altered its meaning; to become redolent of something cultic, sinister and perhaps fraudulent. Much of this due to the mass media attention given to movements whose recruitment techniques have been particularly successful among the young and disenchanted middle class.
In this book, nine academics' papers from a seminar held at the Department for the History and Philosophy of Religion, King's College, University of London in 1986 have been collected. The aims and methods of evangelisation in contemporary society are discussed with reference to some of the newer religious movements that have developed in Britain and Western Europe since 1945.
This collection of essays is a useful addition to the literature of the sociology of new religious movements.
