Lines for 5.2m wherry, a one to two person river rowboat

This boat is intended to be a fast, stable, enjoyable to use river boat for one, two or three people. The lines come from hullform software and only took a few minutes to create.

I had a sketch of Ian Oughtred's boat plans in front of me and saw his 'Mole' design. It looked good and fast to row. So I put a few numbers into the software and this is what came out. I had to lower a couple of the chines in the vertical dimension only, but this only took a couple of minutes. One chine was given equal vertical offsets to that of the centerline. A second chine was lowered visually to about half way up. Another change was to have the bottom panel end in a narrow stern of only 14cm wide. At this stage the layout was still not looking right. I found that in order to get the shape I wanted I had to alter the lengthwise position of the stations. The result was a much, much better layout.

At 5.2m (17ft) long I hope that it has sufficient length to have two rowing stations with a third forward facing seat, aft. I hope that at 17ft is not too long for solo rowing as it is the same length as Sam Devlin's Oarling Dory, however it has lower freeboard than the Oarling. With this lower freeboard I am hoping the lower hull area above the waterline will substantially reduce windage. If I find it possible to retain 3 seats on a LOA of 16ft, then I may reduce the length of the wherry in order to reduce hullarea above the waterline and thus reduce windage.

In these lines I have attempted to get many of the good characteristics of the wherry but with an easier to construct hullshape when compared with a traditional planked boat. I have tried to keep the ends low so as to reduce windage. Midsection freeboard is 23cm at 200kg, waterline beam is 0.85m. When compared with the turf boat the design would be wider at the waterline and thus more stable though probably not as fast. The intention is that the extra chines will produce a better-behaved and more comfortable boat than a banks dory or a turf boat. Should a desire be expressed, I have a full set of offsets available

After a great deal of thought have decided that the wherry should be more optismised for 1 to 2 people rather than three. Thus I have reduced lenght from 17 to 16ft, narrowed the stern a little and increased freeboard by 2cm. The idea is to have a boat that is less afftected by wind, is easier to get in and out of the water and is easier to cartop and is easier for one person to handle. lines are shown below
