GERBERT THE CONQUERER Original Garbett who came to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. It is believed but not proven one way or the other, that Gerbert was a nephew of the future King William himself. king William was crowned on Christmas Day, at Westminster Abbey, 1066. SIR COLIN CAMPBELL GARBETT KCIE CSI CMG. Born in India, Christened on 15th July 1881. At Dalhousie, Himachal, Pradesh, India. Son of Hubert Garbett of Isle of Man, and Henrietta Campbell. CYRIL FORSTER GARBETT Archbishop of York from 1942 to 1955. Cyril was due for a Knighthood in the new years honours list, but sadly died on 31/12/1955, the day before it was awarded. Born 6th Feb 1875, at Tongham, Hereford, to Reverend Charles Garbett and Susan Charlotte Bowes Forster, Granddaughter of Sir Perigrin Maitland. SIR JOHN JAMES WALSHAM GARBETT K.C.M.G. 1st Baronet. Born 6th June 1805, to Colonel John Walsham Garbett, [son of Francis Garbett and Elizabeth Walsham] and Anna Maria Hughes. Knighted 30/9/1831, Authorised to discontinue the surname Garbett, and use that of Walsham only on 10th May 1837. He was Major of the Herefordshire Militia 4th Feb 1846, until 10th Feb 1855. Sheriff of Radnorshire 1871. Married Sarah Francis Bell on 25th May 1826. Died at home in Knill Court, Knill, Hereford, 10th August 1874. SIR JOHN BART WALSHAM K.C.M.G. son of the above. British Minister at Peking, born Cheltenham on Oct 29th 1830. Appointed to the Foreign Office in 1854. Acting Consul in Mexico in 1859. Secretary of Legation in Peking, Oct 1873. Acting Charge 'd' Affairs in Madrid, and then Berlin as Secretary of the Embassy. In 1883 he was transferred to Paris, and acted as Minister Plenipotentiary during the absence of the Ambassador. From Nov 1885 to April 1892 he was Envoy to China, and also to the King of Korea, but later in the year was transferred to Bucharest. He retired in 1894. C.M.G. Feb 1895; K.C.M.G. 1895. He married, in 1867, Florence, only daughter of the Hon P Campbell Scarlett, C.B. Address; Knill Court, Kington, Herefordshire. |
