Officer Killed-Indian Mutiny 1857-9
Lieutentant-Colonel Hubert Garbett.
Wounded at Delhi, 9th September 1857. Died of infected wound at Simla-14th January 1858, Aged 54. Son of Reverend James Garbett, of Hereford. Husband of Jessy Campbell. Grave at Simla, New Cemetery. Inscription reads; "Beneath this tomb are deposited the remains of Colonel Hubert Garbett of the Bengal Artillery who died at Simla on the 14th January 1858 from the effects of a wound recieved at the seige of Delhi where he served as a Brigadier commanding the artillery. Aged 53 years." [should read 54.]

Lost in action on 9th October 1969. On board helicopter in eastern Long Khanh province, South Vietnam, near the shores of Song Dong Nai River. Member of Unit Company A 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th light Infantry Brigade, US Army. Jimmy Garbett was from Quitman GA Lake City FL. Jimmy's body not recovered. Age 21.

Who died aged 34 on Saturday, 31st July 1915.
He was Husband of Florence Garbett, [nee Robinson] of 10/38, New Summer Street, Birmingham, England.
remembered with honour; Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Location:  El Alia Cemetery lies 13 kilometres south-east of Algiers on the road to El Harrash and is situated within a large civilian cemetery.


Historical Information:  The cemetery was originally an allied war cemetery, but was taken over as a civilian cemetery by the municipal authorities after the removal to other burial places of almost all save the British graves. These now occupy the British War Plot, which is 400 metres from the main gate, and is reached by turning left at the end of the central avenue.
