GARBETT COAT OF ARMS
Introduction;
This site is dedicated to the GARBETT family, and its Descendents. I hope you will find it of interest. Whether you are researching your family tree, or just interested in some part of it, you will find content here for both. I hope to be able to help you with your research, and intend to provide such tools and information to research your family back as far as the 16th Century England, to around the time of Henry VIII and his Wives. There will be a mass of information for you to look at, take it one step at a time and you will arrive at your destination. I have traced my family back to around 1530. I have spent over 6 months trying to connect the family of Laura Burress to mine, I can now claim success, we are related back in the 16th Century, and yet I saw a family members photo, an amazing resemblance. Peter Garbett.
How to Research
My Family Tree, Where do I start?

Well that's an easy one, first start with what you know. Get it all put down, clarify it with perhaps an older member of the family. You, your Parents, Siblings, your parents Siblings, Grandparents, There Siblings. Once you have got down ALL you know, the fun part starts. Visit EVERY known living member of your family. Take with you either a tape recorder, or pen and paper, also take your own research information with you. Share this information, let them look through it, Its amazing how many corrections they will make, and extra members of your family they will add. "There is great aunt Jess, she had an child to a previous marriage". NEVER dismiss what people say, My Mother was know all her life as "Betty", her real name apparently "Elizabeth Lillian Spilsbury" Only after her death did I obtain her birth certificate to find that her birth date was a couple of days different, and her name was "Elizabeth Lily". My father celebrated his birth day one day wrong, its amazing what you will discover. When you have completed the rounds of your family, you will find you have a wealth of information, and if you have a scanner, you can borrow those photographs, scan them, Return them as soon as possible, and I bet they have found more, and these will be of more interest, by the time you go back again, the most precious ones come out of the old tin.

Researching in the UK.
In 1837, the British Government, made registering Births, Marriages and Deaths compulsory. Every area had to keep a register of these records, and Every 3 months had to send a copy of these to London. These copies where indexed into Years, then quarters, January to March, 1st quarter. April to June, 2nd Quarter, and so on. Then on the index they listed the events by Alphabetical order of  Surname, then First name  of the Birth Child. [Later the maiden name of the mother was added]. Marriages where listed in the same alphabetical order but records of both parties where listed. Deaths where just in Alphabetical order. All records carry the Registry Area at time of event.  The index is known as the St Catherine's Index. This is available in most libraries or research centres around the World.
To obtain copies of these, one has to send to St Catherine's House in London, these records can be quite expensive, or the best way to obtain these records is to find the Registry area listed, But one problem exists, there where boundary changes in 1974, a new County was established, "West Midlands" this county took land from Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, the very area of the Garbett homeland, but most original registry areas still exist today. So the answer is to try to find the registry area on the Internet, [If researching from abroad]. The original documents are held at the local registry office, However, you are not allowed to view these, but in the case of Marriages, you get an original copy of those records. The Births, Marriages and Death Records from the local Registry office costs £6.50p as of the year 2001.
Census Records
From 1801, a census has been done in the UK, and is done every 10 years, they are released every 100 years, the 1901 census will be released on the 1st January 2002. The early census records where of little use to the family researcher, as they only contained figures, no names. From 1831, this changed, and they carry information on every family, relationship to head of family, age, occupation, and address. The most widely available is the 1881 census, which the Mormon church has had put on to CD ROM. These will all be available from the same places.
Other research Tools
IGI records, Provided by the Church of Jesus Christ and Later Dat Saints, [Mormon Church] These are widely available at Family History centres, Libraries, and on the Internet via, familysearch.com This site allows you to download up to 50 records at a time.
Be a sceptic
Listen to what relatives say, Collect every piece of information you can find, Record where you found the information, you may need to return to it, but check out every piece of your puzzle, find the original documents and copy them.
When using the internet for research, or IGI records, They are a fantastic source of information, and CAN lead you in the correct direction, But use this purely as a starting block, You MUST check out the original records yourself, Dont rely that someone else's has recorded thier records correctly. You will find mistakes, that you have made, and other people have made in thier research, Or if you are sharing your information, other people will find mistakes in your research, But thats good news, you can check it out for yourself, correct it, and you may be put back on track. Dont be put off by errors, and dont act like you cannot make a mistake. I have checked one internet site which seemed to relate to my family, I contacted the Author who did not reply, I contacted again as I had found errors in the information posted, Even though I know the email address to be active and correct, the person would not reply to me. A blinkered view of your records, will not help you, or anyone else using your records. So dont forget, Check out every scrap of information for yourself, Even the information provided on this site, CHECK IT OUT YOURSELF, if you find errors in records, TELL THE AUTHOR, and that includes US.
