THE EARTH REMEMBERS
There's a gate in the woods where a home used to be
A reminder in nature of a family
A symbol of living history
A hint that we never really leave

I see a path through the trees where it winds
It remembers the footsteps of another time
Strolling the walkway and leaving behind
the mark of their visit for others to find

There's an album of memories a shade tree knows
A child's laugh, a picnic, a snowman's nose
A lovers' embrace, a baby on tiptoes
A sweet kiss, a hopeful wish, a skinny dipper's clothes

It makes a difference that they were once here
The earth remembers throughout the years
The places they walked, the things they held dear
The spots where they lingered still appear
to hold the impression of when they were near

There's a scent in the air that carries the soul
It's like a bouquet of the loved ones we've known
It whispers their essence and helps us to know
That we'll be remembered long after we go
