SILHOUETTE
You're drawn in by the shape you see
Merely a silhouette of me
But it's not fair to be defined
by a single dimension, a smooth outline

You'd find out if we ever met
I'm much more than a silhouette

It's natural, I suppose, to be
attracted to what we can see
But keep in mind there's so much more
between the skin and inner core

Beneath the beauty you profess
are layers of life experience
It's hard to fully realize
the depth unseen by your eyes

Enjoy the view, but don't forget
I'm much more than a silhouette

Unlike the smoothness of a child
the lines I wear are from the miles
of my walk through life thus far
A map that shows my route, my scars

Turns I did not expect to make
Unchosen paths I was forced to take
Life leads me over streams and trails
I sink, I float, I dream, I fail

Among the travelers I have met
     Some only saw my silhouette

But do I dare invite you in
and let you see beneath my skin
I must admit I have regrets
and secrets I would not confess

The pains and sorrows that I bear
I choose not on my sleeve to wear
The disappointments and mistakes
I try to hide them for your sake

You see me, but you know not yet
     The shadow of my silhouette

If you could see the dark inside
You might look away and walk on by
For, like a moth, we're drawn toward
what's beautiful and bright and warm

And so, to win the attention I get
     I offer you my silhouette
