THE HELL
He thought it wouldn't matter
He thought no one would care
Surely they wouldn't notice
if he was no longer there

And so he snuffed the candle out
For them, he was not concerned
They would only find the darkness
for his flame no longer burned

But in the darkness he could see
A soul cried out in pain
The anguish he had sought to escape
had found him now again

He never knew how much she cared
He didn't think she'd cry
And now, too late, he realized
what he had left behind

Surely this must be the hell he had always heard of
The torture and the agony, the knowledge of lost love

She sat there stunned in disbelief
the moment that she heard
How could this be?  He's really gone?
She couldn't accept the words

She thought back in her mind
to all the times before
She played them over and over again
She wanted to be sure

Was there anything at all
she could have done or said?
All the questions and the doubts
were loud inside her head

Louder still was the echo
of a hollow emptiness
A future that might have been
A love she did not express

Surely this must be the hell she'd heard so much about
To mourn a love she never knew, and now would live without
