THE HUNT
He peers above the tall grass
then crouches down again
Stealthily he moves forward
Each step silent and deliberate
His coat of mixed colors
blends well into his surroundings

I watch from a safe distance
as he inches ever closer
and realize I will never know
this thrill of the hunt

With confidence and skill he closes the gap
in swift movements and pauses
The intended target
shows no sign of suspicion
Keeping steady focus on his prey
his heart is racing now

He is peripherally aware
of sounds and motions nearby
Grateful for the distraction
that now camouflages his approach

From my vantage point I watch
as another enters the scene
Without concern or awareness
of the plan in action
She advances toward the hunter
with no attempt at secrecy

She has spied her companion
and only wishes to engage in play
"Doe dee-doe dee-doe"
She trots up to his position

Fully alert now, the mark senses danger and takes flight
To the dismay of the hunter, the victim is lost
The pursuit has ended
But there will be no play
The companion must be punished
for this cruel interruption

I chuckle to myself
as I watch my two cats
One now ignoring the other
in the jungle that is my back yard
