How I came out to my friends
The first friend to learn about my gender dysphoria was my best man. We both happened to be in to the same unit again and we picked up right where we had left off pretty much. We both did our basic together, and although I outranked him first he quickly vaulted past me by a rank.
Again, I was not the first to tell him. My wife did yet again. I definitely wanted to tell him myself when I was ready but she stuck her nose in it again. He seemed to take it well, and said it didn't matter who I was on the outside it was inside that counts. We stayed in touch up until I left British Columbia, and then fell out of contact. I have tried contacting him a couple of times but to no avail.
The
second friend to learn was also in the military. He was someone I trusted
and understood quite well, and he seemed to understand me also. We both
came from the "old school" military pretty much, and shared much of the
same views on things. He was an ex-biker, and even though I trusted him
it was hard to tell him. He took it quite well, and said that although
it was not something he would do and couldn't totally understand, he told
me he wasn't going to run and hide. He didn't and we remained friends and
up to this writing we still contact each other. Here is another person
that others could learn from. An ex-biker, a certified Harley
Davidson
mechanic, and military but he stood by me even when others wouldn't.
The third friend was also in the military (gee, is there a trend to my friends?). He was from Manitoba, and from what he even calls "redneck country". He was a ranger before joining the military and is your typical outdoorsman. He fished, hunted and did some shooting. When I did tell him he seemed a little shocked but seemed to take it well. He didn't blab it out to anyone and when others would put me down later he would ignore them.
