March 26th, 1999 | Virus Name: W97M.MAILISSA
/ W97M.MELISSA
If you have received an e-mail that looks like the following : From : { Name of infected user } Kindly please adhere to the procedure below:
You could check this by activating your WORD97. From the top menu of WORD97, click on TOOLS. Then, select OPTIONS. Click on the GENERAL tab and tick the checkbox that says MACRO VIRUS PROTECTION. With this setting, whenever you open a WORD97 document that has a macro,WORD97 would prompt you as to whether you would want to run the macro, you should reply NO. If you reply YES, the macro would be launched and your PC would be infected with the virus ( i.e. if the document with the macro carries a virus ). The LIST.DOC file contains the Melissa virus (see below for more info). W97M.Mailissa (also known as W97M.Melissa) is a typical macro virus which has an unusual payload. When a user opens an infected document, the virus will attempt to e-mail a copy of this document to up to 50 other people. The Melissa virus first sprang up in countless e-mail inboxes around the world on Friday, replicating itself to end-user address books and sending an exhaustive list of pornographic Web sites to everyone therein. W97M.Melissa is a virulent and widespread computer virus found on Friday, March 26, 1999. This virus has spread all over the globe within just hours of initial discovery, apparently spreading faster than any other virus before. The virus spreads by e-mailing itself automatically from one user to another. Many multinational companies reported widespread infections, including Microsoft and Intel. Microsoft closed down their whole e-mail system to prevent a further spreading of the virus. The number of infected computers so far is estimated at tens of thousands, and rising quickly. W97M.Melissa spreads by e-mailing itself automatically from one user to another. The virus activates by modifying the user's documents, inserting comments from the TV series "The Simpsons". Even worse, it can send out confidential information from the computer without the user. |
