Anne McCaffrey This talented writer has scores of books. The following are some of my personal favorites. THE DRAGONRIDERS of PERN The first humans to settle on Pern barely noticed a distant planet in the same system; their descendants could not afford this oversight. The orbit of the Red Star swept close to Pern and when that happened, deadly silver threads would fall through the skies, searing all they touched. To combat these invasions, the Pernese bred huge, sensitive flying beasts that could teleport themselves in an instant and destroy the Thread in midair with their flaming breath. Men and women with telepathic ability were trained to ride the dragons. Dragonflight was published in 1968. Anne McCaffrey was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1926. She majored in Slavonic Languages and Literature at Radcliffe College. She married in 1950 and has three children, Alec, Anthony and Georgeanne. Her first novel was published in 1967 by Ballantine Books. She currently lives in a house of her own design in Wicklow County, Ireland. She has called it Dragonhold-Underhill (because she had to dig out a hill on her farm to build it). She is best known for her two series, The Ship Who Sang and the Dragonriders Of Pern.
