Farewell potatoes
 
A custom known by the name of "Farewell potatoes" was kept in Budapest. 
Children also are involved. In New Year day the inhabitants of Budapest eat baked potatoes, choose "the king" and "the queen of the potatoes" as well as the knight that will wear in the new year... "The Order of the Potatoes". 
Which is the origin of this custom? 
At the end of the year 1838 the Danube flooded Buda and Pesta and the inhabitants took refuge on the environs hills and fed up in the peasant's house with baked potatoes... Next year the people didn't forget the benevolent peasants and organized solemn feasts with... baked potatoes in the honour of their hospitality. 

Rãmas bun de la cartofi 

La Budapesta s-a pãstrat un obicei cunoscut sub numele de "Rãmas bun de la cartofi", obicei la care participã cu mare bucurie si copiii. În ziua de Anul Nou, locuitorii Budapestei mãnâncã cartofi copti, aleg "regele" si "regina" cartofului, precum si cavalerul care va purta în noul an Ordinul Cartofului. 
Care este originea acestei datini? La sfârsitul lui 1838, Dunãrea a inundat Buda si Pesta, iar locuitorii s-au refugiat pe dealurile din împrejurimi si s-au hrãnit în casele tãranilor numai cu cartofi copti. În anul urmãtor, oamenii nu i-au uitat pe binevoitorii tãrani si, în cinstea ospitalitãtii lor, au organizat praznice sãrbãtoresti cu... cartofi copti!
