Romanian folk costume has specific local elements and it is one of the most beautiful folk creations.

The Women Folk Costume

Women costume includes a peasant woman skirt, a shirt, some belts, one kerchief and two traditional peasant sandals. The shirt is very rich adorned. Round the neck it is embroidered with wool, cotton and tinsel ornaments. These are nice coloured. The chest and the sleeves are decorated with float embroideries, with vertical or oblique dots. The most used ornaments are black squares filled with red or green. The sleeve finishes with a bracelet, embroidered in the same colors. The peasant women's skirt is woven of black wool adorned depending on the activity where the women participate. For the normal days the women wear one black and simple peasant skirt. For the special occasion the women put on striped dress with the stripes on the sides. The big silver stripes are decorated with very thin pink, red or blue stripes. The belt, which has different sizes and color, is woven of wool. The kerchief is put on hair and it is a long stripe, two meters long with gold or silver threads.

The Man Folk Costume

The man's costume includes one shirt, a pair of trousers and one waistcoat.

The shirt has two large sleeves, with rich ornament at the neck, on the chest, at the joint of the shoulder and the on the down part of the sleeves. The embroidery is made with wool or with cotton threads. The decorative motif is a zigzag dash. It forms triangles, which are alternatively filled with red or green embroidery. The trousers are white, tight in the lower part and they are made of wool. The man also wears a waistcoat, ornamented with the same models as the shirt.

In winter the men and the women wear a sheepskin coat. The man's sheepskin coat is simple, but the woman's sheepskin coat is richly ornamented. The men and the women also wear traditional peasant sandals.

Costumul popular tradiţional este purtat astăzi doar de ţăranii de la munte, în special în zilele de sărbătoare sau cu alte ocazii speciale.

Populaţia din oraşe îmbrcaă aceste costume doar cu ocazia unor festivităţi la care iau parte. Copiii orăşenilor fac cunoştinţă cu acestea când le îmbracă pentru serbări, unde prezintă obiceiuri locale sau dansuri populare.

Costumul popular din Vrancea are elemente specifice zonei şi este unul dintre cele mai frumoase creaţii populare. Costumul femeilor se compune din catrinţă, cămaşă, bete, năframă şi opinci. Cămaşa este bogat ornamentată. La gât are un décor brodat cu lână, bumbac şi beteală. Acestea au un colorit echilibrat şi armonios. Pieptul şi mânecile sunt decorate cu broderii plate, cu punct vertical sau oblic. Cele mai folosite ornamente sunt pătratele negre, umplute cu roşu sau verde. Mâneca se termină cu o brăţară, o terminaţie brodată în aceleaşi culori. Catrinţa este ţesută din lână neagră, ornamentată în funcţie de activitatea la care femeia ia parte. Pentru zilele obişnuite femeile poartă o catrinţă simplă. Pentru ocaziile speciale femeile îmbracă fuste vărgate, cu dungile spre extremităţi. Dungile mari, argintii sunt decorate cu linii subţiri, fine, de culoare roz, verde şi albastru. Betele sau cingătoarea sunt ţesute din lână, au dimensiuni şi culori diferite. Năframa se poartă pe cap şi este o fâşie lungă de circa 2 m, ţesută din borangic, ornamentată cu fire aurii sau argintii.

Costumul bărbătesc este format din cămaşă, pantalon, pieptar sau vestă.

Cămaşa are mâneci largi, cu cusături bogate la gât, pe piept, la încheietura de la umăr şi pe partea de jos a mânecilor. Broderia este lucrată cu lână sau fir de bumbac. Motivul ornamental este o linie în zigzag. Triunghiurile formate de aceasta sunt umplute alternativ cu broderie roşie sau verde. Pantalonul este alb, strâns în partea de jos şi este ţesut din lână. Bărbaţii mai poartă vestă sau pieptar, ornamentate cu aceleaşi modele de pe cămaşă. 

Iarna, atât bărbaţii cât şi femeile poartă cojoc. Cel bărbătesc este simplu, în timp ce al femeilor este bogat ornamentat. Bărbaţii ca şi femeile poartă în picioare opinci.
