My name is Annie Victoria and tomorrow I will be 10 months old. I'm a soft coat wheaten terrier and my owner loves me very much even though I'm a bad girl at times. I hear that Santa is going to bring me some really fun toys. I want to wish you Happy Ho idays and tell you that I enjoyed the happy music on your website!

Maureen, bless your heart from rescuing this dog and giving him such good care. [Although I don't think we should use Mr. McDuffie's site as a chat board, I could not successfully response to your email address listed below.] I have an Irish SC Wheaten (f om Ireland) and health issues may not be quite the same. If you cannot continue with home prepared diets, look into Innova and California Nature (same manufacturer). They are only available from specialty pet supply stores. [I found it locally at a su ply store that caters to breeders and kennels.] My dog use to occasionally has a sensitive digestive system and this line works for him. It also improves their coats. I cut it with a little turkey and brown rice and veggies. It is comprised of "real f od" ingredients and recommended by Holistic Vets. You may also want to contact wheatenrescue.com and post your inquiry on the Wheaten L site. Good luck. Susan

I actually rescued a wheaten from a pet store. For a lot of the same reasons MR McDuffie fell in love with them. Also for being a terrier lover my whole life.I knew some background about them beforehand.I truly believe my wheaten would have died in that st re;had I not rescued him when I did.He has had some significant health problems in the 8 month's I've had him.I feel he may have PLD/PLE. he exhibits some symptoms.MY vet and I are trying to find a hypoallergenic diet he can tolerate.I am feeding him a home cooked diet and supplements right now.I would appreciate any information or feedback anyone would care to share. THANK YOU! P>S> today is Virgil's first birthday!

Hello Joe, Hope you and the youngsters are doing well. I'm posting this note here because your Web contact email address appears to be off--my emails returned with "unknown recipient address". The big news here is that a new Irish Wheaten crossed the Atlantic recently! He is a 10 week old male from our breeder, Helen. My sister-in-law delivered him to her friends who have Paddy's half sister. Paddy and I are going over to visit him this week nd. Paddy is doing great. His coat is beautiful and he has also matured quite a bit--more obedient and trustworthy off lead. The last few months have just flown by. We never managed to get down to N.C. this fall due to brutal travel schedules. We are planning to drive down over the Christmas holiday. If you are still interested in meeting Paddy, we could stop by Cabaret. In ny event, let us know how you are doing and if your travels will bring you to our region in the near future. Regards, Susan Foulds

We are interested in this breed for our next family dog. We have a 5 month old but are not looking at getting a puppy until he is 3 years old. We are looking into breeders for questions about the breed. Are you puppies raised with children? What is th average live expectance for your dogs? Have you had any particular genetic genes that you have breed out? Thank you for your attention to these questions.

Service unavailable Attached Message Final-Recipient: RFC822; Action: failed Status: 5.5.0 Last-Attempt-Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 22:50:52 -0500 (EST) Attached Message Hello Mr. McDuffie, FYI I sent this message last evening by email and had it returned. Thank you for such an informative and caring website. I am quite confused about the number of kennels, and the seeming availability and wide range of prices for wheatens out there. I want to make a good decision here and as I have little experience with d gs need to trust someone. I'm afraid about some of the horror stories regarding health, temperment etc. Yet I wonder for our family's needs/wants whether we need the "gold standard" either. Is there such a thing as a reputable "pet only" breeder of whe tens? I ask these questions of you and hope for your guidance because its so clear from your website how deeply you care. Also you are the only person I have come across in NC. We are in Durham, NC. Please consider my questionnaire and offer me whatever feedback/information you can. Perhaps a phone conversation might be an appropriate followup? Do you ever allow visitors? Thankyou for your help, Sincerely, Nanci Burrows Nanci

Love your web page and I also love the Irish standard SCWT. I adore my US wheaten "Luke", but I must admit that I wish the US standard conformed with that of the Irish. You must have a lot of fortitude to continue showing when you receive so little supp rt. I grew up in SC, so maybe sometime I'm back that way I'll give you a call and try to wrangle an invitation to visit your kennel and meet your dogs. Thanks for the fun web site! Hello, I filled out your questioniare late last night and came back to view your site again. I can see why many, many people would like to get a puppy from you. My heart is very empty now, I don't think I could stand to wait to bring joy back into it. I am so leased to see a breeder that cares so much about how he place's his dogs and how carefully you watch your lines for health and temperment. On Sun. 10/22 I called a Wheaten breeder who had an add in the newspapper. She has a 4 month old little boy left. y Husband wanted to run out the door and drive 2hrs. to Rockford, Ill. to get him. I really would like a female because, of the peeing on the front legs that a young male will do. I feel a female is less dominant and having rasied 2 human boys, I don't ant be be the only female in the house(it's a women thing.) My husband is only willing to spend $550.00 on a dog which make's our search nearly impossible for a carefully breed Wheaten. I have looked at rescue Wheaten's and fear they may have Temper prob em's and training a real challange. Also, my Son doesn't want what he calls...another used dog. I love all breeds, even the loveable mutt. After owning a Wheaten my family wants but...a Wheaten. Do you have any advice? Wendy,

Two years ago, we were looking after my in-laws' dog for a couple of weeks. While walking him in the park near our home, my wife came across a frail little old lady being walked by a boisterous, shaggy haired, blonde dog. My wife has always loved dogs, bu since we both work, and our two boys were only 8 and 6, we had put ownership of one on hold. However, my wife enquired of the little old lady what breed the dog was. The lady replied that she didn't think it was anything special, she had obtained it from a rescue home when her other dog died, as she loved the company, living as she did, on her own. However, she had only had the dog a few months and admitted that it was a little lively for her. Well, we became friendly with the lady (Gwen) and her lovely d g (Molly) and took it out for long walks for her at weekends. Gradually her stay with us lengthened, until one time we had her over the whole Christmas period as Gwen was visiting relatives. During this time, of course, we all grew to love her... her inte ligence and loving nature were like no other dog we had known. Soon after, Gwen, who suffers badly from asthma and is well into her 80s, asked us if we would like to take on Molly full-time, since she didn't think she was able to give her enough exercise. Well, sad as we were for Gwen, we didn;t have to be asked twic . We had reservations about leaving her in the house for many hours during the week, but we have a fully fenced, quite large, back garden, and we always give her two good walks every day, one at 6.00 am (!) and one in the evening. We also have two Burmese cats which she is QUITE friendly with, so she has adapted beautifully and shows no sign of stress. Up to now, we thought she was just a 'bitsa' (bitsa-this, bitsa-that), but on our travels around with her we came across several people who remarked that sh was a lovely Wheaten Terrier. This prompted some research on the web, hence I came across your site. Your description of your first meeting on Broadway is so accurate, and all the other characteristics mentioned on the other sites led us to the inescapab e conclusion that we have been amazingly lucky to have found a typical, gorgeous, Wheaten. We don't have her show-clipped, but we do have her regularly trimmed, and we keep her brushed well, especially in winter! It gets muddy round here! Anyway, many thanks for the site. Not sure if Molly is from Irish, English or whatever-stock, but all we know is that there has never been another dog like her.. a sentiment I'm sure you hear from most owners!

I had a Wheaten for 11 years before he got cancer. A more loving and playful companion cannot be found anywere. He was also brave, he saved my house from burning down when it caught fire by alerting me to the danger. He loved water, rain and thunder st rms. He liked to go out, look up at the sky, and bark at the thunder. He tried to catch the rain drops as they fell. I would highly recommend Wheatens to anyone with allergies. I still miss him even after 3 years. I plan on getting a new puppy as soo as I have a good place I can keep him or her.

So, I realize that it may be a few years before I get one, but I know it's what I want. The puppies are adorable to look at and the adults are beautiful. Excellent!!!! Finally a man that wants to straighten out the breed- for real!!!! I am sooooo tired of these "visionaries" who think that they are "improving" the breed! Phooey!!! I want one of this man's pups for pet puposes only. Having owned German Shepherds for years, I am dropping out of the breed because it has literally been ruined by "visionaries" who thought they could "improve" the breed. Thanks to them all, it has been d stroyed now!!!Good work!! I also want a smaller dog, that is not a shedder. Shepherds, God bless them, shed 24/7. :)I can't handle all that hair anymore, I have arthritis, and am not so picky about my house as I used to be.I say let the dog jump up on the couch and watch tv with the rest of the family! Well, I am rambling, so I will hush! :) My old shepherd is failing now, (11 yrs. in Feb.2000) I don't think she will be with us much longer....I don't want to be without a good dog! The reason I loved Shepherds was because they seem to understand the world around them. I think Irish Wheatons are the same! Are they not? Again, I say BRAVO to Mr. McDuffie-- the dog world desperately needs more people like him!!!!(so do the dogs!)I would like to have him consider me for a female pup probably pretty soon....I WILL spay her, as I want her only as a loving, guarding pet. I am not in the show bus. any longer. Thank you, Mrs. Julia Pastore

Hi Joe......I have long admired your beautiful European wheatens, in fact, yours were the first I saw at Montgomery some yers ago. I thought your bitch at that show was really special. While my line is still healthy, I dread the inevitable appearance of LE/PLN, and have made a promise to myself and my husband. While I know that there is no guarentee that this dreaded disease will not show up in the European lines, I still have those feelings of the beauty your little girl exhibited that day at Montgomer . It has been at least 10 years since then and I still remember her as if it was yesterday. AND her temperament was impeccable!!!! It's time that the Lonestar Wheatens did some true soul searching about adding an Irish wheaten to this O'Neill clan. I hope to see you at the next Montgomery and reintroduce myself to you. You are one of the reasons that I stay on this list. You are the voice of reason and stability. Enjoyed viewing your beautiful Irish family. My Murphy looks much like your "Madame Foo Foo". It was nice to know that the dark hair on his face and on his back are not that uncommon. He isn't a year old yet though and I know that he can change. Thank you for your devotion to this wonderful breed!

I loved you website. I've been very interested in Wheatens for a few years now. The first time I saw a Wheaten I fell in love. I have a precious, wonderful 10 year old Cairn Terrier now. She's an only child and will be for the rest of her life. She would be very mad at me if I got another dog now. I love Cairns dearly but I'll probably want two dogs next time and the Wheatens i terest me a lot. And a change might be nice. So at some point, I might be contacting you about your pups! I've never showed a dog and would probably only have pets. I love the look of the Irish Wheatens and agree with your philosophy whole hardily. Again, I really enjoy reading your site.

I am the proud owner of 2 50% Irish Wheaten and 50% North American Wheaten Terriers. I've had dogs ALL my life --- but none of them compare to the loving, loyal and cuteness of the Wheaten Terrier! I was in love with the Irish coat the first time I laid e es on them! People , no matter where I am, stop me to look at, inquire about and complement me on them. My 3 year old male "MacArthur" is of the "laid back" nature and his 1/2 sister "Meka" is the lover and sometimes "trouble - maker" Meka is 2 years old nd is still maturing into her adult coat. I just wanted to say HELLO on behalf of my "sweetie Wheaties" Marcy

Hi! I'm a "lurker" on the Wheaten-L and I always enjoy and absorb much wisdom from your posts. The latest on "breeding with PLN/PLE" have been particularly articulate and instructive. My partner and I are the lucky companions/moms of 3 wheatens (three nd a half years down to nearly 11 months old); they are our beloved "youngsters" and household companions. I pray every day that they escape any potential disease, as well as for all those who have been afflicted. We are not looking to add to our family at any time in the predictable future, but when we are (and, God willing, it will be many years down the road), I hope we will be able to be considered by as thoughtful, knowledgeable, and playful a breeder as you. Thank you.

I came upon your web site by accident and was very impressed with your concerns about the breeding of Wheatens. We have a female Wheaton (Lindy) who will be 4 years old this May. She is the "love" of our life, goes everywhere with us and is a joy to be around. Not a mean bone in her body, loves everyone she meets (people, dogs, horses, cats, birds but not rabbits). We have had other terriers breeds before, but none as sweet as a Wheaten. They are truly everything you say and MORE!!!

I truly enjoyed your website. It is beautifully laid out and full or terrific information and pictures. My family's Wheaten just died this year and it was quite touching to look at all your young dogs. For the record, I think you are on the right track bringing back the old Irish strains. My only question: are breeders whose lines are based in American stock breeding back to your dogs? It seems to me when it's time for an outcross they couldn't think of a better choice. Thanks again! Katie p.s. I am currently campaigning my Portuguese Water Dog bitch, hoping that she will be the foundation bitch for my kennel

Am researching breeds as I just lost my Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and I do not want to replace that breed because he was such a great pup and I do not want to compare him with another Toller. I have seen the Wheatens and they appear to be a very laid-back dog which is what I want. My question is: are they hypo-allergenic, not that it really matters. Do you clip their coats as we live in the woods and I spent hours de-burring my Toller each Fa l. I would love a bitch, to be spayed, as a friend, not a show dog. What is the general price range for Wheaten puppies? I have lots more questions, but they may come later. Thanks!

I've become interested in Wheatens, and will be looking for one next spring. I have located 3 breeders in the state of Washington (Elena DeLanda in Bothell, Mel & Diane in Puyallup, and Shelly Sumner in Spokane)and 2 in British Columbia (Penny Rogers & J dy Hodgkins). Are you familiar with any of these breeders or their breed lines?? Do you know if any breeder in the Pacific Northwest (including British Columbia) that has the Irish line of Wheatens? My father in-law lived in Ireland until 19,and I am o Scotch-Irish ancestry. My wife (Mary Harley) and I have both been to Ireland twice (once together with our son & daughter). My son currently lives in Washington D.C. and works in Falls Church, Virginia. He is not very familiar with Wheatens yet. Any dvice or referrals would be greatly appreciated.

She understands that she is supposed to go when we go out, but doesn't seem to understand that she should wait. Also, doesn't give me any clues that she needs to go. Any suggestions? I am interested in the possibiity of getting another Wheaten, however, the health issues and in-bre ding seem to keep me at an arms length from the commitment. PLEASE email me for further information about your darlings and possible chance of puppies for sale. The one Wheaten that I have seen was from a puppy mill in New York. Could we intervene this uppy mill and get those darlings out of the cages that they are currently being held captive? I miss Jules so very much, but most of all, his "WOOOOOOO" when he was happy.

That and the fact that this the best breed in the world, has made me a Wheaton owner/lover. We bought our Bonnie Sweet Molley Malone from Bonnie Snyder in Thousand Oaks, CA. almost three years ago. These have been the best three years of our lives. I mean it. I am most interested in the Irish breed. I was not even aware there was a difference until I read one of your comments. I m not ready to go anywhere with this right now, but I would like to know how one would get a true Irish Wheaton. I have the feeling you are the best kind of breeder. Thanks

Thanks for a fun sight. We are hoping to get a true IRISH Soft coated wheaten terrier from a breeder (the pups are 2 weeks old). We have two little boys (7 and 10) and we are very excited to have a new family member. Any advice?

Your dogs look lovely. I have two SCWT's who are currently in the show ring (Wicklow Holweit's Princess Xena and Wicklow's Stormin' the Gates). Xena is more your type of dog- she has great coat and color (although she is almost 2 and is just starting to come into her own- she has been slow to mature). However, as she is only the breed standard height for bitches, she is often overlooked by judges for larger more plush dogs(!). Keep up the good work. Your article was very interesting!

hey Joe, Somewhere down the line, after we talk etc. would you even consider allowing me to breed to one of your studs? Or is that a NoNo? I am under contract to MA Dallas for one more breeding, to her choice, after that.......I am on my own. Then..........I REALLY will be A BEGINNER, but I know in my heart I am going towards the Irish. If you have any words of wisdom of what I should be thinking. PLEASE, I want your direction. Miss your e-mails......Ellen Dix

I very much enjoyed your presentation and found it interesting as well as informative. A quick vignette about my introduction to Wheatens: I really knew nothing about the breed, read about them in an all breed book and thought - great, a medium sized fri ndly dog who does not shed (wow, low coat maintance) and is very un-terrier like!!!!! So, what did I know??!! I was attracted to something about them and went to view them in a show in Baltimore. At that time I knew one person who had gotten one of Emil Holdens pups years ago. Well, as a researcher, I immediately went out and got the little hardback book found on all breeds at petsmart-type stores!!! Now comes the point of my story....I noticed something different about the dogs in some pictures vs. o hers. I described the 'different' looking dogs and told my friend that I liked this type and asked what was the difference. My friend smiled and said that what I wanted was the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier!! I didn't realize that breeders like you existed!! Your dogs are beautiful! Carol

Hello Joe! Wonderful website! I almost bought a Soft coated wheaten 5 years ago but it was too soon after my german Shepherd died. I like the size of the wheaten and through the new Zealand Kennel Club here in wellington have the name of a lady who breeds soft coated wheatens Im not sure if they are Irish or American, but suspect they are Irish as they dont look cutesy or fluffy.Im saving my money and when I finish my Business Degree later in the year I'll buy my own wheaten. In fact I might even start my wn Wheaten saving Plan!! They are about $450 US here. I think your dogs are just beautiful. regards Deborah

Hello from Finland ! Your home pages really made me happy. That is exactly how finnish breeders should start to think - to appriciate more the original irish soft-coated wheaten terrier's natural, shiny and silky outlook. Unfortunately allmost all wheatens here in Finland are of that fluffy awful american type of coat and we have only few breeders that try to continue Mrs. Maureen Holmes's work. Keep up the good work over there ! Regards, Mia and Risto Hemmilä

I'm becoming more and more interested in the Irish type Wheaten. As a professional groomer I know for a fact how difficult some of the American coats can be to keep up-way too much work and incorrect to boot!
