Cue The Great Escape music.

Today I left Rocket and Luna inside the fence and came outside through the garage. First they ran to the gate but could not get out. So far, so good. Next I walked along the driveway and Luna bounced up and down on the other side of the fence. Now this field fence is only 30" inches tall. Rocket will actually rest his head on it when I'm on the other side. He has never tried to jump it. It never occurs to him, he's not a jumper.

Luna, however, is shorter than the fence but is bobbing along behind it and towards the end where it snakes into the woods she finds "it", a part that isn't stapled to the post. She takes both front paws and pounds it down twice then leaps over the now 15" high fence. Rocket looks like a lightbulb went off in his head. Wow, what a concept! He gathers himself to leap but backs off when the wire "twangs". He wanders into the woods to do some business, then comes back, gets his courage up and jumps!

But I know this is not the spot, there aren't enough paw prints for it to be the prime escape route. So I take them for their walk and get Yogi. I invite everyone back into the yard and we walk along the fence. Into the woods, around the back, we're approaching the steep slope up to the back of the house and Yogi sees something on the other side of the fence. He surges ahead and suddenly ducks underneath. Luna follows and is under a split second later.

There is a well packed trail from the side of the house, down the hill and under the fence. The fence is attached to 2 cedar trees about 20 feet apart. Perhaps the trees grew 6 inches in the last 7 years and the fence rode up with it, but however it happened, the fence bottom is suspended above the packed snow with a 10 inch high gap at least 3 feet wide.

I called Luna back and she squeezed under, a little more slowly since it was up hill. She was kind enough to demonstrate twice more until I finally managed to catch her with my camera. (photo coming)

Now that the hole was found we finished our walk and I left my pups at Yogi's house until I could figure out how to patch the hole.

I'll save that for the next entry; Luna Thwarted!
