The Convoluted Art of List Making

I'm good at making lists, too good. I have them scattered all over the house. Often I lose one and have to start another only to find the original a few days later with the missing items I couldn't remember. This is usually after I have returned from the store.

This week I have at least 3 lists; one for tomorrow's shopping, the second for things I need to pack for my trip to visit my mom, the third for things I want to buy there to bring back here. My lists are often broken into shorter lists or categories within them; pills to bring along, the dog stuff, knitting projects while TV watching, presents for my family (we're having a VERY late Christmas party since mom was in the hospital right before and couldn't make it out here on the trip we had planned.)

I've got about a week to get everything at home ship shape too, so there is also (in my head, a bad place to leave a list languishing) a list of things to do around the house so DH doesn't go nuts looking for things to eat, etc. For instance I forgot to buy the pistachio nuts last week even though they were on the new shopping list, more prominently displayed. This list also has supplies for my future ducklings, chicken wire for my garden, etc. not just food, a multi-tasking sort of list.

On my computer desk I see approximately 20 or more pieces of pink and blue note paper with all sorts of lists. The other day I threw out three. I had no idea what those were for anymore. Some were lists, others notes to myself of things to do, sort of one item lists. I know I can throw out the one with the email of the shipping company that brought my kayak, in fact I'll do that now... well maybe later, it's lost amid all the others. What else is here? another note/list has a recipe I'll probably never use, (I have lots of unused recipes on scraps of paper, this one is for cream cheese frosting). There's one listing error messages my PC has given me. Anyone know what JAVA error 1500 means? I think I will throw that one out. Gone!

I'm considering getting a cheap cork board to pin my lists to the wall to neaten up the desk a little. I've been thinking about it for a couple weeks, it's been on one of the lists in my head. The more I think about it, the idea grows on me, like a fungus. I can get a cheap one at the dollar store to test it out. But more and more it seems like a good idea. I think I'll go downstairs now and write it on my list.

As a serious list-maker myself, I can relate. Consider this alternative. You could make it yourself with some of your spring fabric! Cover that dollar store cork board with fabric and then criss-cross ribbon, fastening on the back with thumbtacks. That way you can slide your slips of paper with your important lists behind the ribbons and you won't need thumbtacks. Ta-da!

Once I decided I'd go high-tech and start using a tiny message machine instead of keeping up with a litter of lists and notes. But there was something unsatisfying about that. I need the comfort of of a marked-up piece of paper in my hand.

I too make copious lists, especially when I am about to travel. I generally try to use a big enough piece of paper that I can have multiple lists on a single sheet, and dutifully cross things off as I get them done/bought/etc. Otherwise I end up losing track of the lists and fretting about it.

But I do use my Palm - or "The Oracle," as I refer to it - to keep track of some things. I've tried to use it for shopping, but don't find it as effective as a paper list. But for many other things, it has literally changed my life, and for that I love it. ;-)

I use spiral notebooks for my lists. Make a separate paper list to take to the store with me, but the master list remains in the spiral. I use one page per week (with the opposite page for notes) and date them. Check off what I have gotten or accomplished, and move it to the next week if it isn't checked off. I have spiral notebooks dating back for years - almost a diary of sorts! A cork board would work, but might end up cluttered in the long run - spiral notebooks are cheap and keep all your eggs in one basket - so to speak!!! LJ
