Dual-pond system - Part II
I had to re-design
the ponds after one of them sprung a leak...seems like Bubba the Florida
snapper took a chunk out of the liner one day...anyway, I ended up getting
a couple of hard plastic pre-formed liners, and put them in the ground
where the old ones where, after a few hours of digging. Following
are some pictures of the new setup:
As before, the upper pond(closer to you in the
picture) is a few inches above(higher)the lower pond, so that it drains
into the lower pond. You can see the filter bucket at the right of
your screen; also visible is the 2-inch PVC pipe that drains the upper
pond into the lower pond, and in the lower pond, the "stack" or 6-inch
PVC pipe that houses the pump, a Rio 600gph submersible.
Below, you can see Bubba lurking under the floating water hyacinths
in the lower pond; can anyone name the other floating plants? They
look like little umbrellas, with single stems & leaves, which poke
out of the surface after a while. They get really thick and have
to be trimmed periodically.
Below is a view of the lower pond, with the drain from the upper
pond at the left and the 6-inch PVC pipe housing the pump at the
right.
The pump "housing" has 4 rows of 1/4" holes drilled an inch apart
around the bottom half; this allows unfiltered water to enter the pipe
& then the pump, where it then gets sent to the filter bucket via a
garden hose.
Below is another view of the upper pond:
At the very top is the filter bucket, draining over the pond;
at the bottom you can see the 2" drainpipe, connected to the upper pond
with a bulkhead fitting.
POSTSCRIPT NOTE: Upon doing some asking around & web searching, I came up with an ID of "Marsh Pennywort", or Hydrocotyle umbellata, for the other floating plant in the ponds. Many thanks to those who replied!
