Moose's Favourite Treat Recipes
Moose, being the gormandizer that she is, has tested a few recipes for doggie treats. While she won't guarantee that your pooch will enjoy these, she is willing to accept any left-overs... we wouldn't want any waste now, would we?
Tasty Aussie Cheese & Bacon Bickies.
4 Cups Wholemeal Flour
1/2 Cup Shredded Tasty Cheese (Cheddar)
2 Bacon Stock Cubes
2 Tablespoons Veggie Oil
1 Tablespoon Vegemite (or Promite, or if you really can't find either, Brewers Yeast)
2 Cups Warm Water
and two of the following:
1/2 Cup Cracked Wheat
1/2 Cup Rolled Oats
1/2 Cup Wheat Germ
1/2 Cup Raw Bran (you choose what type, but not the processed pellet types)
method:
Mix all the dry ingredients and cheese. Dissolve the Vegemite and Stock cubes in the warm water. Mix all the ingredients together and divide the dough into two batches.
Preheat oven to 180C (350F). Spray two baking sheets with a veggie oil. Roll each batch of dough directly on to each sheet. Pre cut the bickies by making a cut across the middle of the rolled dough from side to side. Then from top to bottom, cut bickies into 2cm (3/4") strips. Using a fork, poke holes all over the bickies.
Bake in the oven for 25 minute, then turn oven off and leave in the warm over until cool (to make sure they get really hard). Separate the bickies and put into an airtight container. Note: you can freeze half the bickies to ovoid them going off in humid weather.
Heart o' Gold Jerky
1 Beef Heart
2 cloves garlic
1/4 teaspoon salt
other herbs to taste
Method:
Pre-heat oven to 150C (about 250F). Put crushed garlic, salt, heart and herbs in a pot of boiling water. Boil the beef heat for 20-25 minutes. Remove heart and slice as thinly as possible, and no more than 2 mm thick. If you have a deli meat slicer, that would be perfect. Place on ungreased baking sheets and put into oven for about an hour or until meat has dried. The thinner the meat is cut, the quicker it will dry.
After cooling, put into airtight container and keep in the fridge. Makes a great training bait.
