Choosing a Vet

Humans: Creatures subservient to cats

The best time to look for a vet is before you actually need one. Who are you going to call in case of an emergency? And do you trust that person? Will they come to your home if necessary? These are just some of the questions that should be addressed. Your vet can even help you in choosing a pet that is right for you.

Your friends or relatives may be a good source of information. Ask them about their vet. What they like and dislike? Check out your local directories.

Then compile a list of questions and concerns you may have regarding a vet.
What do you expect from the doctor? You may wish to visit several veterinarians before making a decision.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What are regular office hours?

  • Are they compatible with your schedule?

  • Who covers the practice when the doctor is unavailable?

  • Do you feel comfortable with the doctor?

  • Will the doctor speak to you over the phone, or do you have to "come in for a visit"?

  • Are house calls available?

  • How are emergency calls handled during regular office hours and after office hours? On the weekends?

  • Is the office clean? Any unpleasant odors?

  • Ask about payment policies.

  • What types of services does the doctor provide? Spay/Neuter? Grooming? What about farm animals?

  • Is the doctor a member of any professional associations?

You are the best judge of your pets health. You know when "something just isn't right with your babies. Your doctor is going to rely on you to notice changes in behavior or habits.

Vets are very special people. Don't forget to let them know that they are appreciated for the work they do. A good vet will understand that the animal they are treating, in your eyes, is your child.
