Sweet Lorien Cattery is no longer active in breeding Smokes and Cameos. Most of the cats on these pages have crossed over as of 2006. Some of the younger ones were placed in loving pet homes. Although it was sad to see them go, it was time to move on. Most of these old friends lived to be between 10 and 15 years old - which is a good run for a Persian!

We now specialize in breeding Silvers and Goldens and are striving for Blue Silvers and Blue Goldens under the cattery name of Alchemist. We are always looking for something different and challenging, and once again, I think we found it!

Enjoy spending some time here and looking at our past. When you finish, take a look at our future and new breeding program with Silver and Golden Persians. Our new cattery name is Alchemist Persians.

The color contrast with the Red Smokes, Black Smokes, and Smoke Torties is more clearly defined whereas the Cream Smokes and Blue Smokes can be rather subtle. Each cat will be different in appearance even within it's own color classification. This is why the average breeder refuses to work with these colors and why most judges don't know how to judge them at the shows preferring the solid and bi-color cats. It takes an eye that is well trained in working with color and a tremendous amount of patience as these cats change color from time to time shifting between light and dark hues. As young kittens and adults their color can appear to change daily. Pretty cool, huh?

Red Mouse
Red Smoke Cameo Male Kitten

A Smoke is a Smoke, no matter what color, because of the glistening white undercoat. Each hair is tipped in a specific color giving the all over effect of shading. The ruff and underbelly are typically lighter with the top of the head, back and legs being the darkest areas. "clown markings" are typical on the face.

To breed a Smoke of any color, at least one of the parents must be a Smoke and even then, there is no guarantee that the resulting kittens will be Smokes. Even if both parents are Smokes, there can be solid kittens and Smoke kittens within the same litter. If it was easy, it wouldn't be fun.
