I am a pet lover so thought it only fitting that the purpose of my page would be to showcase my 2 beautiful Bichon Frises, "Buttons", and her son "Good Karma".
I would also like to tell you about my best buddy, my cat "Zipper".
The Bichon became the favourite pet of the aristocracy until it's affections & popularity were replaced by another breed.
Banished to the streets, the Bichon won the hearts of the common people.
It was not until the 1930's that the breed was taken seriously and recognized as an official breed.
The Bichon stands 12 inches or less at the shoulder. The coat is white. Shadings of buff, cream, or apricot are permissable, but making up no more that 10% of the coat. Dark pigmentation of nose, and "halos", which surround the eyes, enhance the breed's intelligent expression.
The Bichon requires regular grooming to maintain it's soft, cloud-like coat. Grooming allows a time for owner and pet to bond. They come to enjoy it!
Their personality is endearing. Bichons are a very sensitive dog ; harsh words or hitting are out! The Bichon, like any other pet, responds to love and affection. They are naturally playful, comical, and love to learn tricks.
Buttons is a purebred Bichon Frise. She is not a show dog, but a beloved pet. I fell in love with the breed after reading about them and talking to people familiar with the breed as well as breeders. I wanted a dog, but I wanted a dog that would suit my life-style and my needs as a pet owner. Research is an important part of pet selection.
Her Registered name is Laurenbelle's Shiny New Button.
True to her breed, Buttons is an intelligent, playful, affectionate, little dog and she absolutely adores children.
Buttons couldn't care less if she ever went for a walk. She seems to view them as a duty rather than a joy but we take her for them nonetheless. Exercise is important for any dog, even small breeds such as the Bichon.
Buttons is never happier as she is when everyone in the household is present and accounted for, and she can sit perched on her pillow on the sofa.
Buttons had her first litter of 4 beautiful pups in the Spring of 1998 producing 4 gorgeous puppies ; 2 boys and 2 girls. Her second litter was born in May of 1999, which added 4 busy little girls to our household.
After receiving my Kennel name of "Bitaheaven" from the C.K.C., I decided to go with a theme, and named the 2nd litter of pups after cookies as they were so sweet.

Yep, there's four of them in there. They wouldn't sit still!
Good Karma is the son of Buttons from her first litter. He is also a Purebred Bichon Frise. He's a real handful, and keeps his mom (and me), busy.
Karma has a loving, trusting, personality and loves to cuddle. He's a bit of a couch potato ; loves to go to bed at a decent hour. Karma can sleep anywhere! We often find him draped over the back of the sofa, sound asleep.
Unlike his mother, Karma enjoys going for a walk. He becomes ecstatic everytime he sees me get his leash. He often prances like a little pony when he's happy or acting silly.
Karma is neutered but in his mind he is still a Don Juan. *S* What more could you expect from such a handsome little dude!
Well, I did it again. I couldn't bear to part with all of Buttons pups, so again we kept one. Her name is "Twinkie", or Bitaheaven's Kicking The Clouds Away. She's like her father, a real wild little pup, always happy, and always looking for some fun. She was doing tricks at an early age, understands far more than she lets on, and is very vocal. Twinkie is bigger than her mom, Buttons, but smaller than her half brother, Karma. She enjoys the pool and digging in the flower bed around the pool - a habit I hope she's forgotten by this coming summer. Just like Buttons and Karma, she finally peters out around 10:00 and will ask to go to bed if we haven't retired by then. The picture (above) is Twinkie on the left with her mom, Buttons.
Zipper is my 18 year old Domestic Short-Hair Cat. She and her sister "Bandit" were given to me when they were 8 years old by my friends Bill and Wendy. They were probably the greatest "gift" that anyone could ever have given me. They have both been a great source of fun, and affection.
Bandit passed away in June of 1996 of cancer. My husband and I still miss her terribly. She had quite the personality. Bandit was the boss, so Zip was just lost without her for quite a few months. When we brought the puppy home, that story ended pretty fast. Zipper then fancied herself the boss, and sure showed Buttons the rules.
Zipper is diabetic. She tipped the scales at prior to her treatment for diabetes. Obesity in a pet is something that should be viewed seriously. It can lead to diabetes as it did in Zip's case, as well as a host of other ailments. I gave Zipper an injection of insulin each morning for a few years ; she lost 10 pounds, and now her blood sugars are controlled by diet alone.
Zipper is a champion sleeper. She rarely plays, but is always ready for her two passions (aside from sleeping), food and tummy-rubs!

Cooking for Your Pet
While pregnant and nursing, Buttons is fed a diet that is entirely home-cooked.
There are several good books written by veterinarians that give explicit instructions regarding Pet Nutrition as well as Recipes. I use "Natural Health for Dogs & Cats" The book is written by Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., PHD & Susan Hubble Pitcairn. I find it to be an invaluable source of information. The book is available at Pet & Health Food Stores.
