Bleeding from any part of a dog's body is an emergency if there is a great deal of blood loss or if slow bleeding continues for any length of time. Nose or Mouth This can be life-threatening if there is a lot of blood. Cold compresses or ice packs can slow the bleeding but are difficult to apply. The best treatment is to get the dog to your veterinarian. Skin Pressure should be applied to the wound to slow the bleeding, either with a clean cloth or by hand if the area is difficult to bandage. Foot and Leg To prevent continuous blood loss from a footpad laceration, a pressure bandage should be used, held in place with a sock. If the laceration is a more serious, spurting, arterial bleeding wound you should stop the bleeding with a pressure bandage placed around the entire foot. Again place a sock over the bandage. Do not tie anything tight around the dog's leg that will cut off the circulation in the foot. The use of tourniquets is not advised. ********* Any cut severe enough to require a pressure bandage will probably need stitches. Back to Main Page Back to Home Remedies |
