THE GREAT AMERICAN GUINEA PIG RELAY

Fluffy has been busy! Just look where he's been!

Fluffy the guinea pig is a stuffed tri-colored piggy that belongs to me, Teacher Teresa....(actually he belongs to my son, Christopher) Fluffy is Christophers' brain child. As a preschool/kindergarten teacher (and an after school program teacher, too!)I was always trying to figure out a way to make learning fun for my students. It was Christophers idea to have an "around the world relay" using Fluffy. I contacted the people on the Guinea Pig Daily Digest, which is an internet publication where people can post things about their guinea pigs. We had so many responses we actually had to turn some folks down. We stopped at 52 addresses.

Geography is especially hard for small children to figure out. They are still learning that there is a world beyond their own street, neighborhood, and town, let alone accross the ocean or accross the United States.

This is me, Teresa, with my friend Teacher Chris, the kindergarten class, and my son Christopher holding Fluffy.

Fluffy became a way for myself and my friend Chris Johnson...also a teacher at the same school... to teach our students about other places. The children began to grasp that there are other children who have classrooms and teachers in other towns, and in other states.

The project started out as just an idea, and has grown at a phenominal rate.

We sent Fluffy off armed with a journal for posting things he has been doing, a photo of the class with myself, my co-teacher, Chris and my son Christopher. He was off to the post office and we began to wait.

We posted a map in the classroom and put a colored pin in "Salem, Oregon"...our town.
