For one year,
King Graham ruled Daventry with the aid of the three treasures. Then one
day when he looked into the magic mirror he saw the face of King Edward
in it. The old king told King Graham that it was time to find a bride to
marry. For if he did not provide an heir to the throne, the kingdom would
soon grow weak again. King Graham called for his prime minister Gervain
and asked him how he should do to find a suitable bride. Gervain suggested
that King Graham should host a celebration, and invite all the maidens
of marriageable age in Daventry. He did so, and maidens came from all over
the country. Unfortunately, King Graham didn't fall in love with any of
them and after two days of partying, they all went home. But as the troubled
King looked into the magic mirror again, he saw an image of the most beautiful
bride he had ever seen. He asked the mirror who she was and learned that
her name was Valanice and that she lived in the kingdom of Kolyma,
but that the evil witch Hagatha had taken her to an enchanted land
and imprisoned her in a quartz tower, guarded by a ferocious wild beast.
King Graham now knew what he had to do, and travelled to the land of Kolyma
to start the search for Valanice. The story of his adventures there and
his rescue of the lovely maiden is told in King's Quest II: Romancing
the Throne. King Graham and Valanice got married in a monastery in
Kolyma and returned to Daventry as a royal couple.

It didn't take long after the marriage before Queen Valanice got pregnant and gave birth to twins. The boy was named Alexander and the girl Rosella. But happiness didn't last long, as Prince Alexander was stolen from his cradle by the evil wizard Manannan, who took the boy to his home in the faraway land of Llewdor to raise as his slave. But there was nothing to do, and the family experienced many unhappy years. King Graham aged, and his hair turned gray. Then, an evil three-headed dragon invaded the land of Daventry and through the years its terror devastated the kingdom. Once a year, the dragon demanded a maiden in sacrifice. And on the eighteenth year after the birth of Prince Alexander and Princess Rosella, it was none other than the Princess that was to be sacrificed. The King and Queen locked themselves up in the castle to despair after Princess Rosella was taken avay. But they didn't know that their son had managed to escape from the evil wizard, learned about his true origins and travelled over sea and land to Daventry, where he successfully managed to kill the dragon and rescue his twin sister. The story of his deeds is told in King's Quest III: To Heir is Human.
Suddenly
Alexander and Rosella came walking together into the throne room. It was
an incredibly happy scene when their long-lost son return and the whole
royal family finally reunited. When he saw his brave children standing
there before him, Graham felt that his time of adventuring was over and
he decided to pass on his beloved adventurer's cap. He went for it and
flinged it towards his children. But then, probably because of the extreme
feeling of happiness at the moment, he felt a terrible squeeking pain in
his chest and fell to the floor. King Graham had had a heart attack. He
was taken away to his bed, awaiting death. But he was too young to die,
and just when the family had reunited and all. It simply wasn't fair! It
was lucky then that Princess Rosella was contacted by the fairy Genesta
from the land of Tamir through the magic mirror. In Tamir, there
was a fruit that could save King Graham's life. Rosella was magically transported
to the land of Tamir, where she found the fruit. But before she could return,
she also had to save Genesta and Tamir from the evil of the witch Lolotte.
The story of Rosella's adventures in Tamir is told in King's Quest IV:
The Perils of Rosella. She brought the magical fruit back to Daventry,
and after eating it King Graham revived and was soon well again.
