My Gosztonyi Cousins

John Gosztonyi was born in March 1865, probably in Ternye, Austria-Hungary. He died May 22, 1905. (Death date comes from online newspaper obit) He married Ruzena (Rose) Tachovsky about 1886. She was the daughter of Jan Evangeline Tachovsky and Theresie Sekerka, and was born May 7, 1870 in Cerekvice, Bohemia (present-day Czechy) They settled in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (Northampton County). In the 1900 Census they are living at 302 Second Street, South Bethlehem. In the 1910 Census the family is living at 208 Locust Street, South Bethlehem. In the 1920 Census, the widow Rose and her youngest son Julius are living at 217 Packer Avenue, Bethlehem. In the 1930 Census the widow Rose, her widowed son Charles, and his family are living together at the same address. In 1914, Rose re-entered the United States through Ellis Island.
Their children:
  1. Charles, born July 1888 in Pennsylvania. He got married after the 1910 Census (census date: 15 April) to Mary ?. She died before the 1930 Census. He served as godfather for two nephews born on February 19, 1908, and October 31, 1909, at Sacred Heart Church, Palmerton, Pennsylvania. He re-entered the United States at Ellis Island in 1924. Why was he abroad?
    His family:
    1. John, born 15 April 1911 in Pennsylvania. He died in May 1985, while residing in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
    2. Marie, born about 1912 in Pennsylvania.
    3. (Private)
  2. John, born December 2, 1889 in Pennsylvania. He married Dorothy ? about 1911. She was born March 15, 1888 in Pennsylvania. They were godparents to a nephew in early 1915 at Sacred Heart Church, Palmerton, Pennsylvania. It appears they moved out to Denver, Colorado, where each is residing at the time of death: hers in January 1968, his in May 1969. Somewhat unusually, Dorothy's Social Security was issued in Florida.
  3. Rudolph, born September 1891 in Pennsylvania. He married Olga Payer, daughter of Stephen Francis Payer and Erszebet Fuchs. The marriage date is in question. She was born June 22, 1895 in McAdoo, Pennsylvania. She died in July 1987, while residing at Waterford, Pennsylvania.
  4. Rose, born September 1894 in Pennsylvania. She served as godmother for a niece born March 7, 1913, at Sacred Heart Church, Palmerton, Pennsylvania. She re-entered the United States at Ellis Island with her mother in 1914.
  5. Julius, born May 22, 1899 in Pennsylvania. He died in March 1984, while residing in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Other Gosztonyis

I found these in the U.S. Census but could not connect them to John. There was also an Irene Gosztonyi who married Otto Tachovsky. She was said to be born in Ternye, Austria-Hungary.

Unknown Goszontyis who were living in Bethlehem at time of death:

Other Gosztonyis in the SSDI which are probably related to this family:

A Maria Gasztony re-entered the United States in 1908, stating that her residence was Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and her age was 20. It is impossible for me to determine if she might be connected with the Gosztonyis mentioned on these pages.

Family information

From family sources, I know that Ruzena (Rose) Tachovsky, daughter of Jan Evangeline Tachovsky and Theresie Sekerka, was born May 7, 1870 in Cerekvice, Bohemia. She married a Gosztonyi.

Also, Ruzena (Rose)'s brother Otokar (Otto) married Irene Gosztonyi. According to a cousin on this side, Irene was born December 15, 1875 in Ternye, Austria-Hungary. It seems likely that these two Gosztonyis were from the same family or were somehow related.

The family bible also indicated the following Gosztonyi relatives served as godparents:

Notes

I have now been able to determine the location of Ternye, Austria-Hungary. It is in Saros Megye (county). It is now Terna, Slovakia. Source: RadixIndex.

Meaning of Ternye:
It appears that "közönséges ternye" is the Hungarian name for the flower Alissum alissoides.
