Welcome to

Mr. Franko's 2003-2004

Grading and Policies

Concept and design:
A. McQueen c.1996; revised 02/2004 KMF

I've established this page to assist students in my math classes and their parents. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions, questions or observations.

Class Expectations

Respect my right to teach and your classmates' right to learn. You should come to class on time, stay on task at all times, and avoid disruptive behavior. Those who interfere with anyone's right to teach or learn in this class will fall subject to the appropriate consequences as outlined in the student handbook.

Come to class prepared everyday.

You need to be in your seat and ready to start class when the bell rings. Your covered textbook, a 3-ring binder, paper, pencils, erasers, and a calculator should be brought to class everyday.

Uphold all of your student responsibilities!

Be sure to complete all assignments on time, do your best to help those around you, and above all else...if there is something that you do not understand, ask for help!!! I cannot provide additional assistance if I do not know that it is needed.

Materials

These materials are needed every day:

1. A 3 Ring Binder with sections for math only. This will be used for handouts, warm-ups, notes and homework.
2. Pencils and erasers. No work will be accepted when done in pen.
3. All students need a scientific calculator. The TI 34 or TI 30 (Texas Instruments) calculator is a great solar powered calculator that is available at Target, Staples, WalMart, Kmart or Office Depot. Any other scientific calculator will be fine.
4. Ruled, 3 hole punched paper. Graph or Engineering-ruled paper will also prove useful.

Homework and Projects

HOMEWORK will be assigned almost every night and will be worth a total of 200 points (2 test grades) per marking period. Each assignment will include warm-ups and notes. Work must be clearly written and all work must be shown.

TWENTY points will be deducted for any assignment that is missing or incomplete when the homework is checked.

TEN points will be re-earned if the assignment is complete when the homework is next checked. All work must be shown. Incorrect answers will not affect the homework grade. Homework checks usually will not be announced in advance.

PROJECTS will be worth 50-100 points and will be given a minimum of a week to complete. None will be accepted late.

No assignment will be accepted after the due date unless a student was legally absent from school that day. Students who miss class due to a field trip or other pre-scheduled function or appointment are required to complete their assignment on time.

Quizzes, Tests, Retakes, eXTra Credit and Make-Ups

QUIZZES will be given an average of once per week and will usually be worth 25 points.

TESTS will be given at the end of each unit or chapter and will be worth 100 points and are to be taken on the assigned day. A review will be given before each test. Any student that is absent the day of the review may have one additional day to prepare.

If you wish to improve your grade on a quiz or a test, then you may RETAKE any quiz or test within one week from receiving the grade. This opportunity may only be taken advantage of AFTER SCHOOL or DURING LUNCH.

I will occasionally offer EXTRA CREDIT assignments, or curve a quiz or test.

Students with unplanned, excused absences may have one additional day for each day absent to turn in any assigned work. Quizzes and tests are always announced ahead of time. Because of this, quizzes and tests that are missed due to an absence for any reason may only be made up AFTER SCHOOL.

Grading Policy

Grades are based on points earned out of total points possible. Your grade will follow these approximate percentages:

Tests............................................40%
Quizzes .......................................20%
Homework ...................................25%
Classwork, Participation................5%
Projects .......................................10%

The grading scale will be based on total points where 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69 = D.

GRADES WILL BE SHOWN IN CLASS BY STUDENT ID NUMBER.

I will be more than happy to sign student planners to verify that grade.

Additional Assistance

I am available to help those students who have questions after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only. Students should notify me of their plan to stay after in advance.
