  1. Print out a Trail Map. Highlight the Northern Route and the Southern Route in different colors. Put a color-coded key on the bottom of your map. Which route are the mushers using this year?
  2. Use the State of Alaska Kids Web Site to discover facts about Alaska. Describe the following things:
    a. What is the area of Alaska in square miles?
    b. Name three natural resources found in Alaska.
    c. Describe the different climates found in Alaska.
    d. Who were the original inhabitants of Alaska?
  3. Describe the Iditarod Background and History.
    a. What was the original use of the Iditarod Trail?
    b. Write a paragraph about the Great Serum Run of 1925.
    c. Why does the race alternate between a northern and a southern route every other year?
  4. Use the Alyeska Sled Dog Products Website to decide what kind of sled you would use. Draw a picture of the sled of your choice.
  5. Go to the Mush with P.R.I.D.E. Website.
    a. Describe how a sled dog is trained.
    b. What are the six breeds of dogs most commonly used in the Iditarod?
  6. The Iditarod Race has lots of rules. Go to Dog Owners Guide: The Iditarod to learn about some of these rules.
    a. What is the maximum number of dogs that can start the race?
    b. What is the minimum number of dogs that must finish the race?
    c. How does a musher care for his dogs during the course of the race?
    d. What happens if a dog gets sick or injured during the race?
    e. What are the required pieces of equipment that a musher must carry?
    f. What does a musher do if he/she has to kill an animal because it was ready to attack? What do other mushers have to do to help?
  7. Who are the mushers at this year's race? Go to Iditarod.com to find out who they are.
    a. How many mushers are competing in this year's race?
  8. Who is the "father" of the Modern Iditarod? Find out from The Official Trail Sled Dog Race site. Write a paragraph describing what you learned.
