The Nile is the longest river in the world, being 6.650 km long. The river basin is so immense that it covers almost one tenth of the african continent, including parts of Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zaire. It is estimated that the drain area covers 3.349.000 square km.
The basin of the Nile is divided into seven regions: The lake plateau, The Al-Jabal, The white Nile, The blue Nile, The Atbara, The Nile north of Khartoum in Sudan and Egypt and the Nile delta.
Under way, the Nile reaches Lake Nasser (called Lake Nubia in Sudan) the lagest man made lake in the world, with a potential maximum area of 4.183 square km.
