Mount Audobon is a thirteener in the Brainerd Lake Recreation Area. It is very visible from the Boulder area, and a great hike if you don't do many peaks because of its moderate approach. Since it is not a short hike (probably 4-5 miles one way), it isn't VERY easy, but it is not at all technical. | |||

What? Did you expect another summit photo of the surrounding peaks, like every other
webage hike photo? You'll have to do the hike to see that. This is a
view of the windswept
ridge towards the top of Audobon. The wind was blowing hard, and there were these
incredible, swirled patterns in the snow. I did this hike in the winter with two friends. They were using snowshoes, and I used backcountry skis with skins. The hike up follows an obvious trail where you head towards the right side of Audobon's peak to gain a ridge. You then hike up and around the large "scoop" taken out of Audobon's side to the summit. We had no trouble getting up in the winter, although we abandoned the skiis and shoes after a short way on the ridge since most of the snow had blown off. The summit provided incredible views of Longs Peak, and other future hikes in the area. To descend, you can reverse your route, but we chose to glissade down the north bowl for fun, and then regain the ridge and then go back the way we came. The descent was a little tricky right after I got back to my skis and put them back on. I'm not great on back country skiis, and had a good deal of trouble towards the top where the snow was icy and fast. I fell many, many times on the first 1/2 mile of descent. After that, when we were off the steep part of the ridge, it was a nice, gentle downhill to the car. I was able to give one push and ski for literally 2 miles through a switchbacking trail down to Brainerd Lake. We had a great time, although I think I had an easier time on the descent than those poor suckers with snowshoes. Overall, this was an awesome hike. I totally recommend it as a winter ascent. |
